We have participated in the first phase of Culture Shapers, an art competition
sponsored by Houston businessmen so that students are motivated to produce
high quality works of art. This idea came about after the Colombine incident
to encourage students to do valuable and positive things with their time.
There are several categories - drawing, painting, mixed media, photography,
digital art and sculpture. Artwork is submitted with a fee of $20 per art
piece. Students can enter one piece in each category. They choose 10 winners
with the top prize of $5,000. On October 30th, 2011, Tory Treybig, senior, placed in
the top ten art students in the painting category with a beautiful painting of
a bird on a watercolor background. Tory competed with 150 other students in
the Painting category.
Culture Shapers is spreading out their art competitions throughout the school
year. It has been divided
into three events. The first one for Painting and Mixed Media has already
happened and the
judging took place on October 30, 2011. The second event will be for
Photography and Electronic
Media. Those entries will be due on January 28th, 2012. Judging will take
place on January 29th and
the ceremony and art pick up will be that day between 4 and 7 P.M. The third
event will be for
Drawing and Sculpture. These entries will be due March 31st and judging will
take place on April 1st
with the award ceremony and art pick up between 4 and 7 P.M.
Rodeo art pieces were judged on January 11, 2012 at the Art
Alliance on NASA. Results are: Best of Show -Tory Treybig, Senior; Gold Medals - Lindsay
Barckholtz, Senior and Teresa Edeen, Senior. Also, Jack Corpening won Best of Show for his western
sculpture. Sculptures were judged separately this year. All four of their art pieces will be exhibited
for the duration of the rodeo in the Hayloft Gallery. If you attend the rodeo be sure to see what fine
artwork our students are doing.
#-D Sculpture pieces were judged separately this year. Our great news is that jack Corpening won
Best of Show with his sculpture of a horse pulling a Model'T car. You can see all of the rodeo pieces
on our FISD Website.
VASE, Visual Arts Scholastic Event, will take place on February 18th at Clear
Falls High School. Art students are encouraged to participate by entering two
pieces of artwork in any medias they wish. Art students are interviewed by a
high school or college art teacher. They are asked questions about how they
put their piece of art together, what they were thinking, if they thought they
could improve their piece, what art concepts were used, etc. Art students are
rated and have the chance to earn a gold medal at this regional competition.
The highest rated art pieces are re-judged and a percentage of each of the
four levels are invited to attend the State VASE event. The purpose of this
is to recognize quality artwork. State VASE will take place in Bryan, Texas
in March.
