Sci Fair Presentation Info

Science Fair Presentation Information

1.  PAP Chem Projects are due Monday 1/9/12.    Leave your projects in my room before school from 7:45 to 8:20.  Be sure that I have marked your name off of my list when you bring it in.  (You may turn it in one day late for max 70%-retest)

2.  Display rules and guidelines must be followed.  See pg. 45-50 in the PAP Project book.

·        Credit all pictures and graphics on the board

·        The title should be 6 words or less, max. 50 letters.  You may use a subtitle if more specific info is needed.

·        Your lab book is to be included with display.  See pg. 47 in PAP Project book for guidelines.

·        Your abstract (max. 250 words) should be attached on your board. See pg. 46 in the PAP Project book.

·        If you have a research binder, remove and replace graded pages.  Judges should not see graded pages.

·        A bibliography list must be on the board, even if you have a research binder.

3.  Bring your Science Fair Project Grading Rubric to give to me when you present in class.  PAP rubric is on page 71 and ISM rubric is on page 105.

·        Your oral presentation should be 4 minutes in length.  Less than 3 or longer than 5 will be penalized on rubric.  Students will take turns as a timer and will show the presenter time cards to know the time during the presentation.

·        Note cards are often helpful to keep the presentation on track.  Be sure to minimize the time on introductory items (Purpose, hypothesis, procedure) so that you can thoroughly discuss the results, analysis, and conclusions.

·        Starting on Mon. presenters will be chosen from a random list of students.  Everyone must be ready to present on Mon.

·        At the time of presentation, I need to know what science fair category your project goes into.  See page 51 in the PAP Project book for categories and discussion.

4.  Plan on removing and taking projects home the day after your presentation.  Projects left after Thursday 1/12/12 will be penalized 3 points per day left in the room.

       General Comments on projects:

1.     Check your spelling & grammar!!

2.      Remove all items with names (graded papers, SRC forms, Human Subjects forms) from binders that judges will see.

3.      Put all loose papers in a binder or braded folder or REMOVE from project.

4.      Glue your board well!  Erase pencil lines and cut papers straight.

5.      Learn the scientific theory and concepts of project.  Expand your analysis and conclusions. Don’t just put conclusions in the abstract; it is a separate category on the board.

6.      Discuss specific sources of error in YOUR experiment and designed procedure, not just possible nebulous errors.

7.      Identify your variables (controlled, independent and dependent).  See discussion in PAP Project book pg. 36.  Experiments should have a “control” to compare your results to.

8.      Bar graphs are not always the best for your data.  Data over time periods should use line graphs.  Also consider pie graphs for parts of a whole.  See pages 37-38 for discussion on graphs and pg. 54-64 for a discussion on using Microsoft Excel to analyze data.  Statistical analysis is expected at the senior level.

9.      Make sure that your conclusions match your results and that you address the accuracy of your hypothesis.

10.  For all calculations: show equations used and a sample calculation with your data on your board.  Remember to use units correctly and significant figures.

11.  Your measurements should be in metric!
