AP calculus is a course designed to provide a motivated, conscientious
student with college credit. As such, the expectations for the students are
high and their responsibilities are commensurate with the nature of the
course.
Students are expected to
(1) attend every class
(2) actively participate in classroom discussions and activities
(3) complete homework assignments on time
(4) seek extra help when necessary
(5) make up missed work, quizzes, tests in a timely manner
The schedule for the upcoming week is posted on my web site - always by
Monday and usually on the Friday afternoon preceding the week.
Homework is assigned on a regular basis. Students are expected and
encouraged to ask questions about the homework - and it is, obviously, to
their benefit to work the problems first. For a number of reasons, i very
seldom take up and grade the homework although completion grades may be taken.
Students have access to the solutions manual(as well as to the instructor)
and the homework is their “practice.” Homework and daily grades can come from
(but are not limited to) pop quizzes, group activities (with documentation),
worksheets, completion grades for problems on the board, graded homework.
Quizzes and Tests are given on a regular basis; quiz grades count once and
test grades count twice. The test and quiz average comprises 85% of the total
grade. Should a student have an unavoidable absence on a test or quiz day
Wednesdays and Fridays), she/he must make it up as soon as possible and
absolutely within a week. A number of math teachers (myself included)
collaborate in a departmental make up schedule which allows students to make
up a test or quiz any Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday morning at 7:35 or
afternoon at 3:45.
Additional help? i am usually in my room by 7:30 each morning, and unless
something out of the ordinary is going on, i just love answering questions
about calculus. On late arrival days, i will be in my classroom during 4th,
5th and 6th periods (if i know there are students who plan to show up during
their lunch or aid period. Obviously no student should miss another class to
come in at that time. i am not here in the afternoons(except by appointment)
but Mary Gillespie also teaches AB Calculus and will be glad to help - room
2003.
