Scientific Spelling is a curriculum that teaches students to spell words they
do not know by using reliable patterns and rules of the English language.
Students will learn to analyze and categorize words according to three types-
regular, rule, and irregular.
Students read and determine how many syllables are in the word. If it is a
one syllable word, students unblend the word into their component sounds.
They unblend multisyllabic words into syllables and unblend one syllable at a
time.
Students identify the first sound (syllable) and the corresponding letter(s)
that spells that sound (syllable). They determine if that letter is an
appropriate choice.
If they like all the letters used to spell that word, the word is regular.
If there is a part they do not like, the word is irregular.
If a letter had been doubled, dropped, or changed, the word is a rule word.
We are finished with spelling for the year! Have a great summer!
