Teaching Philosophy
The Big Picture: A true teacher does more than tell a story of science, and
a learner does more than just listen to that tale. As an educator, I strive
to keep both myself and my students actively involved in the lesson.
Sometimes in order for a student to see the big picture, they need each
individual section explained. I use several methods to achieve this goal:
the use of supplemental materials, demonstrations, laboratory experiments
that compliment the lecture, and real world situations. When mentoring
students to obtain their educational goals, I observe individual learning
techniques and lead by example.
Classroom Experience: Watching students expand their knowledge of a
specific subject, as well as being a huge part of their path on the way to
that goal, has set my feet on the road of education. I believe that as an
instructor, you can impress upon the student how exciting a subject can be,
and the more enthusiastic you are the more enjoyment and participation you
will receive out of your students. If a student can grasp your enthusiasm
of a subject s/he deems difficult, that student will influence other
students that have not taken that subject before to venture into that avenue
of science.

Grading Policy:
Grades will be determined as follows:
Integrated Physics and Chemistry, Modern or Conceptual Chemistry
60% Formative work: Evaluating students during the learning process. Daily,
homework, quiz, lab, etc.
40% Summative: Evaluation of what they have learned. Tests, projects, etc.
PreAp Chemistry
65% Formative work: Evaluating students during the learning process. Daily,
homework, quiz, lab, etc.
35% Summative: Evaluation of what they have learned. Tests, projects, etc.
AP Chemistry
70% Formative work: Evaluating students during the learning process. Daily,
homework, quiz, lab, etc.
30% Summative: Evaluation of what they have learned. Tests, projects, etc.
Late work: 10% deduction for each day the assignment is late. It is the
students responsibility to get any notes, homework or handouts that they have
missed. For an excused absense, the student has 5 days to complete the
missed work and turn it in for credit. Any missed tests or quizzes are to be
taken on the day the student returns.
