Second Six Weeks

Week Five

Monday November 2nd, 2009 - Today in science class we talked about the three types of rocks and the rock cycle. You took notes on the three types of rocks and glued them into your interactive notebooks. Your homework is to complete your left side page 13 activity. This page will be a drawing of how igneous rocks form.  Since the word Igneous means "of fire" we learned that igneous rocks come from volcanoes.  You should draw a volcano and label where on the volcanoes the types of igneous rocks would form, how fast they form and what size crystals they would have

Tuesday November 3rd, 2009- Today in science class we continued talking about the rock cycle. We did a lab with crayons to help us model the rock cycle. Your homework is to complete your left side page 14 in your interactive notebook. This page should be about sedimentary rocks.  You can use the left side activity of your choice.

Wednesday November 4th, 2009 - Today in science class we finished our discussion of the rock cycle. We practiced more with the rock cycle. Your homework is to complete your left side page 15 in your interactive notebook.  This page will be a drawing of the rock cycle that is labeled and colored.

Thursday November 5th, 2009 - Today in science class we practiced reading maps. We learned the difference between latitude and longitude and practiced finding locations on the map. Your homework is to complete the assignment you did in class today if you did not finish it in class.

Friday November 6th, 2009 - Today in science class you worked on reading a topographic map. Your mineral gizmo is due by today, be sure you handed it into the box in Mrs. Crannie's room. You have no homework, however your Science Interactive Notebook is due on Monday and it is a MAJOR GRADE!

Week Four

Monday October 26th, 2009 - Today in science class we did a rotation lab where students moved through 3 different labs. Students learned about three types of heat transfer, conduction, convection and radiation. Students also learned that heat transfer must be from a hotter object to a cooler object. Students had a quiz at each station and should finish those quizzes and hand them in. Students took notes and made drawings in their science notebooks and should finish them for homework if they are not done.

Tuesday October 27th, 2009 - Today in science class we went over yesterday's lab on heat transfer. 1st - 3rd periods worked on test corrections from Friday's test. Students have the opportunity to correct their mistakes and add points to their major grade. 5th - 7th period did a lab on heat transfer using popcorn. 5th - 7th period have test corrections for homework. Remember, Test corrections must be signed for credit. 1st - 3rd period need to finish the test corrections for homework if they did not finish in class.

Wednesday October 28th, 2009 - Today in science class 1st - 3rd did a lab on heat transfer using popcorn. 5th - 7th period are looking at the properties of minerals and beginning to learn how to identify minerals by their properties. 1st - 3rd homework is to complete the heat transfer worksheet. 5th - 7th period homework is to begin looking at the mineral identification gizmo on explorelearning.com

Thursday October 29th, 2009 -Today in science class we used the laptops to complete a concept map on the three types of heat transfer. We practiced handing in assignments by saving them to a drop box on the network. You have no homework.

Friday October 30th, 2009 - Today in science class we used the laptops to complete an activity on mineral identification. Remember that there are many activities on www.explorelearning.com that will help you prepare for your upcoming science test.

Week Three

Monday October 19th, 2009 - Today we wrapped up our discussion of density. Students completed a density of a liquid activity and turned it in. Your homework is to finish the assignment if it was not completed.

Tuesday October 20th, 2009 - Today in science we talked about specific heat. We learned that specific heat is the amount of energy needed to change the temperature of a substance. We learned that objects with a higher specific heat resist change in temperature and objects with a lower specific heat change temperature easily. Some of you needed another day to work on the density of a liquid worksheet, it is due tomorrow. Periods 5th -7th will need to finish the lab questions.

Wednesday October 21st, 2009 - Today in science we continued our investigation of specific heat. We did some laboratory experiments to help us explore specific heat. You should finish any class assignments that were not finished in class.

Thursday October 22nd, 2009 - Today in science class we reviewed for the test tomorrow. Tomorrow's test will cover chemical change, chemical reactions, chemical formulas, specific heat and density. There will be a few review questions from the first six weeks. Your homework is to study for tomorrow's test.

Friday October 23rd, 2009 - Today in science we took a MAJOR GRADE TEST! You have no homework!

Week Two

Monday October 12th, 2009 - No School - Columbus Day!

Tuesday October 13th, 2009 - Today in science class we looked at the difference between physical changes and chemical changes. We observed different types of reactions and classified them as physical or chemical changes. Students were reminded that their chemical reaction lab reports were due today, if you did not turn that it, please turn it in tomorrow. Your homework for tonight is to finish right side page 8 and right side page 9 in your interactive notebook. These pages should have at least 3 colors on them! Left side page 8 (1st - 3rd period) was to draw a picture from the chemical reaction lab and write 3 sentences describing the reaction and how you know it was a reaction. 5th - 7th period made models of the 5 types of reactions. Left side page 9 was to divide the paper into 4 sections and write 3 examples of each of the items we discussed in class today.

Wednesday October 14th, 2009 - Today in science class we did a lab on Physical and Chemical Changes. Students made observations on physical and chemical changes. We entered our answers into e-instruction for a grade. You have no homework.

Thursday October 15th, 2009 - Today in science class we learned about Density. We did an activity that showed us that objects with a higher density will sink and objects with a lower density will float. We learned how to calculate density. Your homework is to complete the lab on Density.

Friday October 16th, 2009 - Today in science class we used the laptops to complete a GIZMO on density. Gizmos are found at the website www.explorelearning.com. There are tons of gizmos and students each have a username and a password for this website.

Week One

Monday October 5th, 2009 - Today in science class we continued looking at chemical equations. We went over the practice balancing equations worksheets and those were assigned for homework. 1st - 3rd periods only needed to identify the elements in each side of the equation and how many atoms are of each element are on each side of the equation. 5th - 7th should also balance the equations. 5th - 7th period took a quiz on determining if an equation is balanced or unbalanced.

Tuesday October 6th, 2009 - Today in science class 1st - 3rd took a quiz on determining if an equation is balanced or unbalanced. 5th - 7th period looked at the 4 types of chemical reactions and gave examples of each . We looked at vocabulary words like inhibitor, catalyst, endothermic and exothermic. 1st - 3rd have no homework. 5th - 7th need to finish drawing their reactions on the left side of their notebook (page 8).

Wednesday October 7th, 2009 - Today in science class we explored the types of reactions. We looked at examples of each type of reaction and took notes in our spirals. We also began our prep for tomorrow's lab on identifying reactions. 5th - 7th period should complete the background information for the lab for homework. 1st - 3rd have no homework. ALL STUDENTS SHOULD DRESS FOR LAB TOMORROW! No open toed shoes, hair that can be tied back - must be tied back, no baggy clothing or excessive jewelry.

Thursday October 8th, 2009 - Today in science class we met in the lab and conducted a lab on identifying chemical reactions. You should complete the lab report for homework.

Friday October 9th, 2009 - Today in science class we went over yesterdays lab. We talked about the things that we see that tell us if a chemical or physical change has occurred. We saw several different chemcial and physical changes. You have no homework.

First Six Weeks

Week Six

Monday September 28th, 2009 - Today in science we went over the lab from Friday on Law of Conservation of Mass. Students turned that lab in if it wasn't turned in on Friday. Today in class we also passed back papers. The assignments that the students received back today will make great study tools for Wednesday's Major Grade TEST! Students corrected their papers in class to be sure they had correct information to study from. 5th - 7th period learned about atomic charges and practiced identifying if an atom has a charge. Your homework is to study for the test on Wednesday.

Tuesday September 29th, 2009 - Today in science class we reviewed for the science test. 1st - 3rd period learned about atomic charges. Your homework is to study for the test. Best places to study are handouts that were given back yesterday and the jeopardy game on my website.

Wednesday September 30th, 2009 - Today in science class we took a test on Chemistry. Topics included protons, neutrons, electrons, atomic mass, atomic number and energy levels. The test also included trends in the periodic table of elements.

Thursday October 1st, 2009 - Today in science class we learned how to balance chemical equations. We identified elements in a compound, how many of each element in the compound and we looked at different equations to see if they were balanced or unbalanced. We even practiced balancing equations on our own. 5th - 7th period are doing test corrections for homework.

Friday October 2nd, 2009 - Today in science class 1st - 3rd period did test corrections from Wednesday's Test in class and 5th - 7th period did a 3-hole demonstration lab. You have no homework.

Week Five

Monday September 21st, 2009 - Today in science class we completed the periodic table projects from last week. Projects will be graded "as is" at the end of the class period today. Students worked on an assignment called "D'mitri did it" and should complete that assignment for homework if it was not finished in class. Students were also given a puzzle to complete by Friday.

Tuesday September 22nd, 2009 - Today in science class we took a quiz on atoms. We also began talking about our lab that we will do tomorrow. You have no homework, but should work on your puzzle that is due on Friday.

Wednesday September 23rd, 2009 - Today in science class we did a lab on the elements and compounds. Your homework is to finish the lab and hand it in tomorrow.

Thursday September 24th, 2009 - Today in science class we looked at a new set of vocabulary words and did a left side activity on our vocab. We also set up our notebooks to be handed in for a major grade. Your homework is to complete the puzzle you were given on Monday and make sure your notebook is ready to be graded. The vocabulary words for page 7 of your spiral are chemical equation, formula, products, reactants, compound, molecule, chemical reaction, endothermic reaction, exothermic reaction, valence electron, conservation of mass and chemical bond. Your left side activity is the flow map which you will find in the documents and handouts section of this website.

Friday September 25th, 2009 - Today in science class we did another lab on elements and compounds. You have no homework.

Week Four

Monday September 14th, 2009 - Today in science class we continued to talk about the atom models. We practiced using the periodic table of elements to get information about the elements and calculate protons, neutrons and electrons. 1st - 3rd need to finish What's in this thing" for homework and 5th - 7th need to finish reading a periodic table for homework.

Tuesday September 15th, 2009 - Today in science class we looked closer at the periodic table of elements. We identified patterns and trends in the periodic table of elements and we talked about how the atoms change as we move through the periodic table of elements. Your homework is to finish "its elemental" if you didn't finish it in class.

Wednesday September 16th, 2009 - Today in science class we took a quiz on the atom model and reading a periodic table of elements. We also looked at the periodic table again and started an in class project on the periodic table. Each student is creating a periodic table of elements on construction paper. You have no homework.

Thursday September 17th, 2009 - Today in science class we continued working on our periodic table projects. You have no homework.

Friday September 18th, 2009 - Today in science class you finished and turned in your periodic table projects. We had a puzzle sheet that challenged us to use the periodic table of elements for information.

Week Three

Monday September 7th, 2009 - Today is a holiday! No School :(

Tuesday September 8th, 2009 - Today in science class we reviewed for the science test tomorrow. Tomorrow's test will cover safety, equipment, scientific method, graphing and MSDS. Your homework is to finish your lab report from last week and to study for the test. 1st - 3rd period should have 1 graph and 1 conclusion. 5th - 7th period should have 1 graph and 3 conclusions.

Steps to the conclusion...

1 - The hypothesis is accepted or rejected.

2 - It stated (restate your hypothesis with no changes)

3 - To test the hypothesis (what did you do)

4 - During the test it was observed (what data did you collect)

5 - Therefore, the conclusion should be...

Wednesday September 9th, 2009 - Today in science class we took a test on the scientific method, safety, equipment and MSDS. After the test students began to work on the vocabulary for our next unit. We are putting that vocabulary in our spirals. The right side page will have the words and their definitions. The left side page will include a drawing/model of an atom and its structure that is properly labeled. Be sure to include all of the vocabulary words on the left side page. Preap/GT students should complete both left and right side pages. All others should complete only right side page.

The vocabulary words are... Atomic Mass, Atomic Structure, Atomic Number, Proton, Neutron, Electron, Element, Atom and Nucleus.

Thursday September 10th, 2009 - Today in science class are going to the computer lab. We will be taking the technology literacy assessment pre-test that will help us determine how you are doing with technology. At the end of 8th grade all students take the technology literacy assessment, which is like the TAKS test, only for technology instead! We will also look at our other websites and practice logging in with our usernames and passwords.

Friday September 11th, 2009 - Today in science class we are introducing our new topic of parts of an atom. We will be taking notes on the parts of the atom. You have no homework.

Week Two

Monday August 31st, 2009 - Today in science class we did a lab on observation and inference. Students made observations and inferences about 2 different liquids. There was a lab report that we worked on in class. Your homework for tonight is to make sure you have your science spiral for class tomorrow. Each student should have a 3 subject notebook (preferably with a plastic cover because they last all year and don't get destroyed). PreAP and GT students should also complete the lab report for homework..

Tuesday September 1st, 2009 - Today in science class we set up our interactive notebooks. We talked about how we will use the notebooks and we started putting our lessons in to our notebooks.1st - 3rd period should finish their lab report for homework. 5th - 7th period should complete the activity on observation and inference for homework.

Wednesday September 2nd, 2009 - Today in science class we talked about the scientific method, which is the steps that a scientists follows to solve a problem or conduct an experiment. You learned a new way to take notes in your interactive notebook. You created a flow map on the steps of the scientific method. PreAp and GT students also completed the report on the three hole demonstration. Your homework is to complete any assignments that you have not yet finished.

Thursday September 3rd, 2009 - Today in science class we started the pendulum lab. We are using the scientific method to test the variables in the pendulum lab. 1st - 3rd have no homework as we will finish the lab in class tomorrow. 5th - 7th will complete the lab for homework tonight.

Friday September 4th, 2009 - Today in science class we worked on labs. 1st - 3rd finished the pendulum lab. 5th - 7th (hopefully) worked on the paper towel lab. You have no homework over the 3 day weekend, enjoy your break.

Week One

Monday August 24th, 2009 - Welcome to Mrs. Crannie's science class. Today has been a busy day for you, the first day of your last year at Hildebrandt. It will be a great year! Today in science class we got to know each other. You participated in a scavenger hunt. We talked about the procedures at Hildebrandt and in Mrs. Crannie's class. Your homework is to go over your packet with your parents and return the packet to your first period teacher tomorrow. Also, you know you will need a 3 subject notebook for Mrs. Crannie's science class, work on getting that notebook as soon as possible!

Tuesday August 25th, 2009 - Today in science class we talked about Safety! 5th period we had an assembly. Be sure to return your packet to your first period teacher if you haven't already. Also, get your science parent letter signed by a parent or guardian and bring your 3 subject notebook to class.

Wednesday August 26th, 2009 - Today in science class we learned about MSDS sheets. These sheets give us all the important information about the chemicals that we use in a science laboratory, including how to use them, how to store them and what to do if they got on your skin. Your homework is to bring back your packet and your science letter if you haven't already. Also, every student needs a 3-subject notebook.

Thursday August 27th, 2009 - Today in science class we looked at the pieces of lab equipment and we played a game to help us learn their names. Your homework is to bring back your packet and your science letter if you haven't already. Also, every student needs a 3-subject notebook. You will have a quiz on safety tomorrow in class. Study the safety rules in the back of your science book. We have talked about lab safety in class as well. Study the lab safety powerpoints that are on this website under powerpoint lessons!

Things to remember...

1. Complete only those experiments that you have been told to by your teacher.

2. Clean up after yourself, dispose of things according to your teachers instructions.

3. No horseplay.

4. Acid into Water, never water into acid

5. Never point test tubes at another person.

6. Report all injuries to the teacher

7. Never inhale fumes

8. MSDS is material safety data sheet, contains safe use, storage, disposal and emergency information about chemicals in the lab

9. Never touch electricity with wet hands.

10. Wear safety goggles when you are working with chemicals, electricity, glassware, heat or fire and when the teacher tells you to!

Friday August 28th, 2009 - Today in science class we took a quiz on lab safety. We also learned about observations and inferences. We will be setting up your science notebooks on Tuesday, so be sure to have it in class on Monday so that you are ready to set it up on Tuesday! Your homework is to bring back your packet and your science letter if you haven't already. Also, be sure to dress for lab on Monday.
