Transition Process for Incoming 6th Graders

Congratulations! You are a Middle School student!!

Starting middle School is a big step!
This means you are getting older. It is OK to feel:

* excited - There are a lot of opportunities to meet new people, develop new
skills and interests and think about your goals for the future.

* nervous - Starting middle school can be a little scary. Don't worry. Lots
of other students will be feeling nervous, too! You will also be
given more responsibilities. Middle school gives you the chance
to show everyone how much you've grown!

* sad - It can be hard if you aren't in the same classes with some of your
old friends. But look at is as an opportunity to make new
            friends!!

How is Middle School different from Elementary School

* Different Classes - You will be going to a different classroom for each
subject. Some classes may be longer than others and
you will need to learn where each class is and what
time it starts. Don't worry - you will find your way
                       in no time!

* New rules - It is your responsibility to learn what the rules are. Be sure
to read the RRISD student handbook.

* A busier schedule - You have only a limited amount of time to get from one
class to another. Make sure to use your time wisely!
One way to help yourself stay organized is to use a
                       student planner.

* Your own locker - Instead of having a desk to store your belongings, you
will be issued a locker. Be sure you DO NOT share your
locker or your locker combination to anyone!

* More classmates - There may be different students in every class you have.
This is a great chance to make new friends!

* More teachers - You may have a different teacher for every class or a team
of teachers. It can be fun to have more than one teacher.

* More choices - You can take part in extracurricular activities such as
                  band or after school clubs.

* More homework - This is a part of your growing responsibility.

Getting organized is the key to success.
