Why do I have students do warm-ups?

One purpose of warm-ups is to ask questions covering the previous
day's
lesson to determine if learning was successful. By going over
them as a
class, student's will learn the correct answers if they missed
them. A
second, and important, reason is to use TAKs designed questions
to prepare
students for the TAKS format, vocabulary and various levels of
thinking
involved. The more students are familiarized with these
questions, the
easier they will find taking and being successful with the
History TAKS.

Why is the InterActive Notebook so important?

The InterActive Notebook, their "spiral" constitutes all the
important
concepts, vocabulary, and information they need for each test. It
is used
almost daily and is essential in preparation for tests.

What is my policy on misbehavior in the classroom?

Students get "3 strikes and then they are out". This means after
I have had
to call their name twice to redirect their focus, to stop
talking, etc.,the
third time they receive a 1 hour detention for disruption of the
learning
environment. Failure to attend the detention is an automatic
referral.

What about tardies?

After the second tardy, I will warn the student. A third tardy
results in a detention [1 hour after school]. Failure to attend
the detention results in a referral to the principle.

After 5 tardies students serve an after school administrative
detention. After 10 they eat their lunch on the stage away from
other students.

What if my student fails a test?

Students who fail the test may make test corrections for a
passing grade of a 70. They neet to find the correct answers to
the questions they missed, study them and then take the test
again. They may get the information at school or they may use
their spiral. The importance is that they learn the correct
answer so that they won't miss it when it is asked again in
another test, a benchmark, sememster exam or the TAKS test.

What do the semester exams cover?

I want the students to be prepared for high school. Thus I have
comprehensive exams. The Fall Final covers Exploration through
the Constitution. Ths Spring Final covers Exploration through
Reconstruction. The tests are made specifically to ask the most
important questions, not details. The questions are all required
TEKS {Texas Educational Knowledge Skills} Students will be
provided with review sheets as well as time in class to review.
