Earth Day at Laurel Mountain on Friday, April 22nd was the most fun and enjoyable yet. Every class in the school participated in a way that they felt was meaningful to their interpretation of EARTH DAY.
It was a beautiful day and a wondrous opportunity to spend time outside. We reminded ourselves that our planet is the only one that we have and it sure is a beautiful one. We need to take care of it every day to make sure it stays that way!
Classes picked-up trash all around the campus; tilled some very hard ground; mixed soils; added soil and compost; planted many plants and bushes and released about 20,000+ ladybugs!
Take a look at the many pictures taken during the day (click on the "Earth Day Pictures" tab). Roving 5th grade reporters also had an opportunity to interview many students and staff during the day. We'll try to get those clips up on the net asap.
A special "thank-you" to Mrs. Carey for getting the lady bugs for us. THEY were the hit of each class's activity!
"Thank-you" to the many families that shared their time, shovels, soil and plants with us.
"Thank-you" to the staff at LME for backing this project, embracing the concepts and teaching Earth Day fundamentals to their students.
And finally, one last "Thank-You" to Mr. Earley for leading this years Earth Day Celebration. In the last days of this school year, taking on yet another task may seem impossible. But Mr. Earley energetically took this task and we're very glad that he did. Thanks.

April 22 of each year marks the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement. In the 1970's protests were a way to say "HEY LISTEN TO THIS ...". Earth Day founder Gaylord Nelson, then a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, hoped that the first Earth Day would find people listening. He thought that a protest that would bring peoples' attention to the environment was necessary.
At that time, Americans were not thinking about fuel efficient automobiles. Industry belched out smoke and sludge. Air pollution was commonly accepted. Environment was a word that appeared more often in spelling bees than on the evening news. And only a few 'goofy' people cared that many animal species were becoming extinct.

HISTORY OF EARTH DAY:
(updated: July 4th, 2005)Yesterday, July 3rd, former Senator Gaylord Nelson died. Known for his candor, independence and environmental leadership. In 1995 Nelson received the Presidential Medal of Freedom. )
Earth Day 1970 turned that all around.
On April 22, 1970, 20 million Americans took to the streets, parks, and auditoriums to demonstrate for a healthy environment. Groups that had been fighting suddenly realized they shared common values.
The first Earth Day led to the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species acts.
For his role as the Earth Day founder, Sen. Nelson was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. This is the highest honor given to civilians in the United States.
