August 2006
We will begin collecting ink cartridges again. We have plastic bins located just inside the 'drop-off'' doors for each grade level. Please put your empty cartridges in your childs grade level bin. We will send out a congratulations on KPAW for the first grade level to fill their bin.
What cartridges are acceptable and which aren't? Cartridges with print heads such as HP, Lexmark, Compaq, Apple, Xerox, Dell and Cannon (some) are acceptable. Epson and compatable, Canon BCI series, the large laser cartridges and remanufactured or refilled cartridges are not accepted.
Thanks for helping our school and our environment!

END of YEAR UPDATE:
What a great year of printer cartridge recycling!
During the year we collected and sent in four shipments of printer cartridges to our recycling provider, Empties4cash. Our "trash" brought in $672.00. A great end to a great year of recycling at LME.
Thanks to everyone that didnt just throw away the cartridges .. they recycled them to help the earth and to earn money for LME. Remember to save those cartridges during the summer months. We'll have recycling bins at school once again when school starts!
Thanks for helping us recycle!

Did You Know…
.. that more than 54 million households, roughly55% of the total population, own a home computer?
.. that the average household purchases 2-6 printer cartridges per year?
…that it takes more than 2 ounces of oil to produce a new inkjet cartridge, and over 3 liters to produce a new laser (toner) cartridge?
.. that more than 85% of used printer cartridges are simply tossed in the trash?
.. that every 2 seconds a printer cartridge is thrown away in the United States (that’s 1,800 cartridges per minute, 108,000 per hour and almost 3 million per day and over 1 billion per year)! In terms of weight, that is equivalent to over 90,000 African Elephants.
.. that recovering discarded printer cartridges for recycling would prevent more than 570,000 tons of plastics from entering the waste stream?
…that up to 2 liters of oil is saved for every printer cartridge recycled?
…that the plastic used in printer cartridges will take over 100 years to biodegrade in our landfills?
NOW YOU DO. And now you know that YOU can make a change. Recycle and Tell a friend!
