About Mrs. Neu

Hi, I am Jane Neu. This is my fourth year at McNeil but my 11th year of
teaching Science.

I have taught Chemistry, Lab Management and Environmental
Systems at McNeil but this year I am a Science Interventionist for all the
Sciences and our department's Instructional Coach.

I was born and raised in Milwaukee, WI. I graduated from the University of
Wisconsin- Milwaukee. I lived and taught in Missouri for
many years. I have lived in Texas since July of 2007. I have found the Austin
area to be a wonderful place to be.

When I am not teaching at McNeil, I love spending time with my three
daughters and my husband. We love to hike, camp, canoe, swim and bicycle
whenever we get a chance. I also enjoy oil painting and reading.

Educational Philosophy

Main Points

* I always encourage independent thought and open discussion.

* We will work on reading, writing and critical thinking skills to help
students understand the texbook or other articles.

* I will teach note taking and self reflection skills to aid students in
secondary and post secondary learning.

* Groups interactions are common. Respect is essential.

* I use formal and informal assessments. They are authentic and many are
performances based.

* I incorporated many adaptations for each lesson to meet the student’s needs
at the moment. I will teach the concept in different ways so that all
learning styles are served.

* I strive for multiple literacy by integrating subject matter including
writing, reading, math, history, economics, and many other science
disciplines.

* My students are encouraged to use their knowledge to solve new problems
through the use of open ended labs, projects, essay questions, finding the
identity of unknowns, debates, and other scenarios.

* One important part of my job as a teacher, is to guide, encourage and to
challenge students to become life long explorers of their world. My goal is
to have them love science and ask deeper questions.
