Old Town's annual JDRF "Walk for Diabetes" will be held on
Friday, Oct. 23, 2009.

On Friday, October 9 the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation visited Old Town and taught the students about type 1 and type 2 diabetes, as well as nutritional eating habits and exercise. Each student was challenged to raise more awareness about diabetes by sharing information they learned and/or by fundraising with the Kids Walk to Cure Diabetes.

Students will have the opportunity, with parental permission, to participate in the fun by selling paper sneakers (included in take home packet) to friends and family for a donation of $1 or more. Not only will your child be helping to find a cure for diabetes, but JDRF will give our school an appreciation gift. Students can also earn "thank you prizes" as they fundraise to reach different prize levels.

Students should return the paper sneakers to the PE teachers as donations are made. The sneakers will be posted along the gym walls at Old Town Elementary. Please send all donations back to school by Friday, October 23. Checks should be made out to "JDRF."  On collection day, all students will participate in the Walk to Cure Diabetes on the Old Town Track and Nature Trail. Parents and volunteers are invited to join students as they walk.

Diabetes is a disease that affects millions of Americans and each day more than 40 children are stricken with type 1 diabetes, for which there is no cure. Thank you for your participation and support of our fundraising program to benefit both the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation as well as our school.
