COACH MELUCCI'S P.E.

August 13, 2010

Dear Parents,

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Flavio Melucci. I am the Athletic Director and your child’s P.E. teacher for 1st through 8th grade. I am so excited to be teaching your child this year. This letter is to make you aware of how I am establishing our Physical Education program at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic School. My main concern is the health and well being of your child, especially during P.E. Therefore, I am instituting a new curriculum created by Dr. Robert P. Pangrazi called “Dynamic Physical Education for Elementary School Children” for our students at OLG. In addition, the format for Middle School (grades 5th – 8th) will follow Dr. Paul W. Darst and Dr. Robert P. Pangrazi curriculum “Dynamic Physical Education for Secondary School Students”.

Grades 1st and 2nd will begin with strength and conditioning exercises, but we will focus on sportsmanship, respect, game skills, gross and fine motor skills. I will be stressing the joy and rewards of physical activity so that behaviors can be developed that will last a lifetime. This will help build up their endurance and teach them to work cooperatively with their peers.

The P.E. class for 3rd and 4th grades will also begin each day with strength and conditioning exercises before we start the main agenda for the day. The students in these grades will be introduced to sports at the beginning level, learning the basic skills for each sport such as soccer, volleyball, basketball, track, football, and baseball.

In middle school (5th – 8th grades), will be required to change into their P.E. Uniforms (shirts must be tucked in at all times J). It is very important for these students to bring their P.E. uniforms every class period; it is 60% of their grade. If a student does not change/suit out into their P.E. uniforms, they will receive a 60. A grade of 70 will be given to a student who partially suits out (e.g. student has P.E. shirt but no shorts or vice versa). If that same student does not participate, the 60 will go down to a 50. They will be warned before should this happen. If a student changes/suit outs for P.E., and they don’t participate, they will be warned, then if it continues, their grade goes from 100 (E) to an 89 (S) and so forth.

Your child may easily receive a 100(E) for P.E. if they suit out, follow directions and participate in the activity we are learning. Please encourage your child to participate in P.E. because it is an important part of their education here at OLG.  If you have not placed an order for your child’s P.E. uniform, please stop by the office before you leave and pick up on order form. You may also e-mail me at, fmelucci@olgschoolhouston.org or call me at 713.224.6904 so that I may accommodate your order before you submit any payment.

Everyone is expected to participate in P.E. unless you have a Medical condition on file with the school office or signed Doctor recommendations and/or instructions. My goals are to increase their activity to a moderate level, thus improving their motor skills as well as their health, condition, endurance, strength, and self-esteem. The students will feel tired and be sore at first but this will pass. I also want P.E. to help them with their athleticism in case they participate in extracurricular activities.

Additionally, the P.E. structure I have instituted will increase the confidence of the each individual student. Confidence will lead the student to be more responsible. In turn, each student will become stronger in spirit, mind, and body.

Please encourage your child to participate fully in the classes and programs available to them this year. I want to thank you in advance for your support and cooperation in working together to create a consistent ethic of health and wellness in our children.

Sincerely,

Flavio Melucci

Director of Athletics
