Dear Student,

Congratulations on your promotion to third grade! I am looking forward to the arrival of your class. I am busy planning many fun activities and interesting lessons to keep you motivated while you learn. We are going to have a great year together! You may find third grade to be a little different than other years at school. You are growing older now and this year, you will be asked to do many things for yourself. Here are a few examples:
  • Writing your homework in your planner
  • Organizing your school materials in your filer and desk
  • Managing your time with homework and class work
  • Take an active role in the classroom (participate in lessons, classroom jobs, etc.)
There are many ways you can be successful in third grade
  • Keep a positive attitude - crying, whining, and complaining are never allowed
  • Don't be afraid to make mistakes, when you learn from mistakes, they become lessons!
  • Ask good questions
  • Look up words you don't know in a dictionary or computer
I want to encourage you to spend some time during your break reviewing some of the things you learned in second grade. Practice addition and subtraction facts, and start preparing for multiplication. You should get some flash cards and start drilling Math facts every day. Be sure to visit the library often, and always read as much as you can. I have attached a list of book titles - this will help you get started. I am sending home a summer reading log, so you can record all the books you read over the summer. Choose two books that are your favorites and complete the following:
  • Write a short summary on each of the books. Be sure to include the main characters and setting.
  • Illustrate your favorite part of the book. It can be your favorite scene or your favorite character.
  • What did you think of the books? Would you recommend them to a friend or classmate?
You will be rewarded for all your hard work and effort over the summer. Bring back your Reading log and summaries when you return in the fall.

Have a great summer and see you on the first day of school.
