12/11/11
This week we will be reviewing some new procedures in class, and
Wednesday (12/14) we will have a quiz over these new procedures. I have had
the opportunity to pass this information out to the 6th and 7th graders, and
will be giving it to the 8th graders this Monday. If anyone lost their copy or
needs another one you can download it here:

As evidenced by how long it's been since I've updated my announcement
page I am not the best at making sure my page is up to date and I am
sorry if that has made things more difficult. Today is a new day and
one of my goals is to keep this more up to date, so if you've stopped
checking, you may want to recheck one more time-I'll try to have this done
by Monday morning from now on. God bless.

Parents, I will be sending a letter home to you this week concerning
Test & Quiz taking procedures. This must be signed and returned to
me this week and will count as a homework assignment. I will also
post it under the Downloadable Documents link in case it gets misplaced
on the way home.
All grades will be having their first test this Friday, make sure your
children are working on their study guides.
God bless.

It's Wednesday and the week is almost over?!?! I hope that everyone's
pictures turn out as they had hoped and that all the students enjoyed
wearing their regular clothes to school yesterday.
This announcement has to do with our upcoming test next week
Wednesday. We have not been getting through the material as
quickly as I had hoped and I do not want to assess the students
if they are unprepared, so today I will be handing out some sample
questions for them to work on, but I will hold their study guides
until tomorrow (Thursday)-I will also post a link for this study guide
on this website so if the original is lost they can get another copy of
the study guide. This also means that the test will be pushed back
to Friday of next week. I will inform the students of this today in
class.

If you were unable to finish copying the vocabulary words down from the book
here they are:
- An experiment is an organized procedure to study something
under controlled conditions. - Observation is the process of obtaining information by using
the senses. - A hypothesis is a testable idea or explanation that leads to
scientific investigation. - An independent variable is the factor that is deliberately
manipulated. - A dependent variable changes as a result of manipulation of
one or more independent variables. - Data are information gathered by observation or experimentation
that can be used in
calculating or reasoning.

Many students have been asking, and I'm sure many of their parents have also been
wondering, "when am I going to get my textbook?" We will be finishing the current
unit within the next two (short) weeks, during which all three grades (6th, 7th, & 8th)
have been using the same module from ScienceFusion-this is why each student does
not have their own textbook right now. After we finish this unit then the students
will be receiving their own personal books which they can take home and write in.
We have not been able to set up the online services (including the online text) for the
new books yet, but I am hopeful that that will happen this week. Thank you for your
patience.
WELCOME BACK!!!
Can you believe it's time to head back to OLS? I certainly cannot, but here we are again.
I'm looking forward to another great year down here in The Valley.
This year in science class things are going to be a little different-we've got
NEW TEXTBOOKS, and they are set up for a curriculum that is a bit
different from that of previous years. We will no longer be following an
integrated curriculum-this means that we will not be learning general science
lessons to each grade, rather, each grade will be focused on a different domain
in science.
6th Grade: Life Science
7th Grade: Earth Science
8th Grade: Physical Science
One of the great things about these texts is that they come is small paperback modules,
which are a lot easier to carry around than those large textbooks we've used in the past.
We are still waiting on some of these materials to get in, but rest assured that this will
not affect how soon we will be diving into the material.
If you would like to learn more about these books you may go to:
I am so excited to begin another year with you all, to see how your summers went,
and to fill you in on my life. Enjoy the last moments of summer and get ready, I'll
see you soon.
God bless.
