How does my child get home?
Our third grade team dismisses students at one time. Car riders
will sit on the front porch with their grade level. Parents
should pull into the main parking lot. Walkers will
be walked to the back door and realeased. They may meet siblings
that are waiting to walk home in the gym. Bus riders and daycare
will be picked up in the lane between the main building and the
portables. ASPIRE and YMCA will go to the cafeteria.
Dismissal time is at 2:45.
What time does school start?
School officially starts at 7:45 and the doors open at 7:20.
Students who arrive early will come straight to the classroom.
They may eat breakfast in the classroom and I will have morning
work for them. Students arriving after 7:45 will not be allowed
to eat breakfast. Any student entering the classroom after 7:45
will be marked tardy. Students after 9:00 are considered absent.
How much homework will my child have?
Homework assignments are assigned Monday through Thursday and
should take no longer than an hour. In addition to that,
students must read for 20 minutes Monday through Friday.
What is the TAKS/STARR test?
The new test this year is called the STAAR and it replaces the
TAKS test from previous years. The TAKS test was held at the end
of April with one day for math and one day for reading. I do not
have any information at this time regarding the new test. The
scores will be important in looking at your child's overall growth.
However, the test will not be used to determine grade placement
or school accountablity ratings this year.
What is team teaching?
Team teaching refers to the splitting of the subjects so that
students have different teachers for different subject areas.
This year third grade is trying team teaching for the first time.
It has been used by fourth and fifth grades in previous years and
has been very successful. We decided this would be best for our
students because it allows teachers to focus more on each subject
that she teaches. Instead of one teacher trying to do it all, we
can now focus on two or three subjects.
Ms. Radic and Ms. Hoffman will be teaching reading, writing, and
social studies. Ms. Robisheaux and myself will be teaching math
and science. My students will go to Ms. Radic for part of the morning
and will be with me the remainder of the day. We hope this provides
better instruction for all students as well as prepares them for team
teaching in fourth grade. Please be patient with us; this is new to
us too!
