About The Parent Support Specialist
As a part of the Safe School Healthy Students initiative, each campus has a
Parent Advocate or a Parent Support Specialist. This person provides support
and assistence to parents and families who have children with complex needs.
This support can include children that need extra attention due to extreme
changes, for example a recent move or change in family structure. It also
includes children that have significant challenges with academics, family
members, peers and/or behavior. To implement this position, every school has
a Parent Resource Opportunity Center where parents can meet and talk about
different concerns.
The Parent Support Specialist is required to provide workshops during the
year for the parents depending on the needs of the school.
Description of what we do
The Basic funtion is to provide support, information and referrals to
parents of students with complex needs. We also assist campus
administration and the counseling staff with the implementation of Campus
Response Teams.
Why are we here?
As a parent of a student in the Round Rock ISD, we have first-hand knowledge
of how the school works. We can help parents with questions about the
school, how to communicate with teachers and administration, and how to
become involved in your child's education. We can also provide information
on community services. We listen to parent needs and provide assistance
through workshops and individual communication. To help with the success of
the program, Robertson Elementary has provided Room 320 as the Parent
Resource Opportunity Center where a library with books and DVDs on different
aspects of parenting can be found. This is also where our workshops are
held.
