A graduate of Illinois State, I am currently teaching 9th grade math but I am
also pursing my teaching certificate in Composite Science so that I can teach
Biology, Chemistry, & Physics. I used to work in High-Tech but have found
teaching to be much more rewarding.
I have played piano since I was 7 and have a home studio that I use to
compose and record music. My music tastes range from Beethoven to NIN and my
kids often complain when I make them listen to 80's music in the car. My wife
teaches Art at Chisholm Trail and we enjoy spending our weekends hanging
out with the kids in downtown Austin.
I HATED math in High School and had lots of trouble learning math even with
the help of tutors and teachers. When I was college I learned different
study habits and ways to approach difficult problems. By breaking things
into "bite-size pieces" I was able to solve Math problems that used to make
me angry and I was even able help other students that were having difficulty
with Math. I also try to use humor to make lessons easier to remember. It is
my goal to help my students realize that they too can "do math" without it
being painful.
In addition, I want students to learn to think "out of the box and
avoid "linear thinking:". I also expect students to work in a productive TEAM
environment where communication and cooperation are the NORM. Students must
get along with a wide variety of personality types and learn how to NOT do
everything themselves, not matter how smart they are. There is tremendous
strength in collaboration and being able to express ideas to those that do
not understand a concept is a critical skill students MUST learn.
