PTSA – what does it really mean?? It has recently come to my attention that many people might have a few misconceptions about what PTA really is. I completely understand the confusion and had my own thoughts about it when my oldest first started school. “What do they really do?” “Do I have any say in what happens and how the money is spent?” “Why do they always sucker us into a meeting when I all want to do is hear my student play/see them get an award, etc.?” I have asked these exact questions and I’m sure many of you have as well. If you’ll indulge me for a few minutes, I’d like to shed some light on these questions and more.
What do they really do?
Any local PTA unit, such as those in an elementary school, follows the same Vision, Mission and Purpose as Texas PTA and National PTA. They can be found at the "About the PTA" link to the left. In short, we are there to provide parent and student educational programs; foster and encourage family engagement; and advocate for the children at our school, in our district and beyond.Back to Top

Do I really have a say as a regular member?
The simple answer is yes, you do. Most things decided on by a PTA/PTSA board are always pending approval from the general membership. You should always feel free to ask questions of your officers and board members whether you are a parent, student or a teacher. PTSA stands for Parent Teacher Student Association…we all work together. Become involved, ask questions. Your active participation in PTSA can bring about great things and affect the lives of countless children. Whether you choose to give hands on help at the school, volunteer for a committee or serve at a higher level, the way you get involved isn’t important. The important thing is taking that first step and volunteering!Back to Top

Why do they sucker us into meetings?
The simple truth here is because sadly, most people won’t come to a meeting if we held them on their own. We’re all busy – we know that. We try to make meetings and events as convenient as possible; however there are times that we need to hold a meeting to vote on budgetary changes that are time sensitive. We follow a strict timeline as to when we have to appoint certain committees and conduct specific business. Please bear with us. Help us spread the word and get more people involved. We can do great things together!Back to Top
