About Mrs. Schaekel:

Hi! I was born and raised in Maryland. I attended Concordia University in River Forest, Ill. and graduated earning a B.A. My majors were Education and Communications. My first call was to teach first grade at Our Savior Lutheran School in Houston, Texas. I also taught at St. Mark Lutheran School after I married Bert Schaekel. In 1987 Bert accepted a call to Bethlehem Lutheran Church and School in St. Paul, Minnesota, where we spent 13 cold, but happy and rewarding, years. We returned to Texas in 2000 to teach at Salem. Bert and I have 4 children. Our oldest son, Kevin,is living in St.Paul, Minnesota and attending Law School at St Thomas University. Our son, John, is a Football Coach working in Rochester, MN. Our daughter, Deanna,is a Junior at Concordia University in Austin, Texas. Brent is our youngest and is a Freshman at Concordia University in Austin. During the years that my children were young, I stayed at home most of the time, often working at the Pre-school part-time or substituting in different grades at East St. Paul Lutheran School. During this time, I also did Daycare for other teachers and friends. I went back to full time teaching when Brent was in Kindergarten. I love to be in the classroom teaching, but I also loved to be able to "be there" for my own children when they needed me. I thank God every day for that opportunity. This is my eighth year teaching First Grade at Salem. I am certified in Minnesota and Texas. I thank you for the opportunity to teach your children. It is a blessing from God to have children in the classroom who are ready and willing to hear God's Word. I will strive to be an example of God's love to them. I try to always remember that not only are you entrusting them to my care, but God, our Father, is also entrusting them to my care. It is a huge responsibility but also a great joy. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any concerns you may have about your child or his/her work. I will be happy to listen and to work with you. Mrs. Joan Schaekel

About Miss Schlechte:

Hi, I am beginning my 35th year in teaching ministry. The last 16 years have been at Salem in first grade, kindergarten, and now back to first grade. My sister, her husband, and youngest child (17) live in Tomball also, and I have a small apartment on their property. My oldest niece and my nephew have graduated from A&M and are off on their own. I have a BS in Education from Concordia, Seward and a Masters of Education with Reading emphasis from Concordia, Austin. I am certified in the state of Texas in General Education and as a Reading Specialist. I love spending time with my family and friends-especially my three youngest godchildren, who are growing up all too quickly. Reading, taking pictures, swimming, and movies are some of the ways I like to spend my free time. My personal goal is to be on fire for Christ and to live every moment for Him. With His Holy Spirit working in my life, I am able to do all things for His glory. I am assured of my salvation through Christ's death and resurrection. There is nothing I have to do, but out of love I want to respond to God in worship, prayer, study of His Word, living my life in a way that pleases Him and demonstrates that I belong to Him. Listening to God's leading has opened doors to some amazing adventures I never thought I would do, or even want to do-like going on a mission trip to Kenya. I pray my passion for Christ flows into our classroom as we learn Jesus is our best friend as well as Savior, to forgive others, to treat others in a way that demonstrates a relationship with Jesus, to accept responsibility for the choices we make, and to respond to God with our time, talents, and things in worship, service to others, and reading God's Word. Ecclesiastes 7:14 says there will be good days and bad days, and to remember that God arranges for both kinds of days so that we never take anything for granted. So never hesitate to communicate with me-good or bad. Send a note in your child's folder, wait after school until students are dismissed, send an email, schedule a conference, or make a phone call.
