SCHOOL: Salem Lutheran School

CLASS: Middle School Director

SCHOOL PHONE:  281-290-1225

About The Teacher

I am beginning my thirty-seventh year of teaching and my eleventh year of

administration.  I earned a Master's Degree in Elementary Education,

specializing in administration, from the University of Iowa in 1981.  My

Bachelor of Science Degree was gained  from Concordia College, Seward,

Nebraska, in 1974.  After graduating from Concordia I was an educator and

athletic director at Trinity Lutheran School, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, until

1985.  From 1985 to the present I have served at Tomball Lutheran and Salem
Lutheran School.  Prior to moving into my administrative duties here at Salem,I was the athletic director, taught 5-8 PE, and I taught eighth grade religion, American history, and language arts.

My passions include Christian education, singing, history, coaching, yard work, golfing, and Nebraska football.  My wife, Vicki, teaches grades kindergarten through fourth grade P.E. at Salem and two-year-old through pre-kindergarten P.E. at Salem Early Childhood.

My wife Vicki and I have been blessed with two children who have become successful adults.  Katie graduated from Texas A&M in December 2007 and now works in a busy medical sales position with AeroCare in Houston; and David, a December 2004 graduate of Texas A&M, is working for Siemen's Corporation in Daphne, Alabama.

Mission For The Middle School

"I challenge myself, our staff, and students to make the routine exciting and the exciting memorable.  A simple philosophy is shared - work hard, play hard, and be satisfied with simple things.  My goal is to recognize and respect the singular yet unique qualities of each student so that they can do the same with each other.  Relationships relying on kindness and trust can only be built when one finds his or her own self worth. This challenge is turned over to God each day in our prayers and conversations with each other."

"As Salem's assistant director, I continually remind myself and the middle-

school staff that we are in ministry and have a wonderful opportunity to

provide and enhance a solid foundation of knowledge and faith in Jesus

Christ as Lord and Savior as we efficiently provide a solid educational

experience for each student."  I'm looking forward to my twenty-sixth year of
ministry here at Salem.

About the teacher:
This is my 19th year in education.  I’ve taught in California, Texas, and Wisconsin.   I have taught all grade levels from Kindergarten through College student teachers, but have spent the majority of my years teaching middle school science (this is the 15th year).
Outside of school I enjoy spending time with my family, going out to eat, listening to music, reading, collecting angels and Willow tree figures, and cheering for Nebraska football.  I am married and have 2 children, whom you will probably see on campus.
Goals for the class:
desire for all students to develop a love for learning, and for them to make sense of the natural world that God has given us.
To wonder at creation and see that God is both creative and orderly is a huge step of faith and intellectual growth.

About the teacher:
I am a native New Yorker.  I came to Houston in 1983 after being hired for my first job with HISD. After two years in Houston, I decided to make it my permanent residence.  I worked toward my Masters at UH and met and married a Texan.  After 12 years in the classroom , my husband and I moved to Indonesia for his job. While there I learned the Indonesian language, and traveled many places in Asia.  I gave birth to my two children in Singapore.  When it was time to return to Houston, I was sad.  We left a lot of good friends behind.  We returned to Houston and started on a new path.

My children attend school at Salem.  I began working there as a substitute teacher and volunteer.  I managed to find my way back into the classroom.  I have taught Spanish at Salem for one year  and am looking forward to a second year.

I have many interests including travel , the outdoors, languages and learning about different people and cultures. I am an avid outdoor cyclist and keep busy teaching spinning at the YMCA.

I have a love for the Spanish language, people and culture. and I hope to share my passion with my students.
