Dear Parents,

I would like to take a moment to greet you and welcome all of you to seventh
grade Spanish. I am looking forward to partnering with you and your children
as we enter our 2009 academic year.

Seventh grade Spanish is a high school level course therefore, it will
involve high level expectations and in many cases more study than was
required in the past. We at Salem intend on sending out well prepared
individuals.

We will spend the first quarter reviewing basic introductory conversational
phrases, use of basic adjectives such as colors, and numbers, telling time.
Many of the students have been exposed to this material before and have been
able to perform successfully with limited study time.

After the first quarter we will begin new material. As we continue to grow
in our knowledge and use of the Spanish language, students will soon be
required to draw on previous knowledge in order to proceed. Up until this
time, many students have been able to perform successfully with limited study
time and perhaps just listening to what is presented in class.

Drawing on previous knowledge means giving responses that require full
sentences rather than strictly matching and fill in the blank. Students will
be required to use their basic knowledge to translate simple sentences from
English to Spanish. They will become conscious of subject verb agreement.
This level of application goes beyond memorizing a word, to thinking of it
and putting it down on paper, and being sure the correct form is used.

As we move toward our academic goals and strive for higher level skills, some
students are going to struggle. Students that may have been weak already
will find Spanish increasingly difficult. Those students that have not had
to study may find that Spanish requires more study and practice.

When I have spoken with former students that have been successful in Spanish
and asked them how they did it, the overwhelming response is they put the
time in and studied.

The students are now in seventh grade. They will need to take increased
responsibility for their work. They may be presented with a new concept and
may not understand it when presented with it the first time. They may have
to pay extra close attention in class, ask questions and make sure that they
understand and accurately complete their homework.

If your child is doing the work, putting in the study time, paying close
attention in class, asking questions and still does not seem to be picking up
on Spanish, please contact me and we will arrange for extra help. This help
will be available on Tuesdays after school. It is open to those students
that are putting in effort and still having difficulty.

The best way to contact me is through email; dhenscheid@salem4u .com. I
work Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. I do not often check my phone
messages. Please contact me as concerns arise.

I am looking forward to a wonderful year with your seventh grade Spanish
students.

Blessings, Donna Henscheid
