student will demonstrate a simple
science experiment for the class.

Scientist Spotlight

Each week a different student
will prepare a poster that spotlights
a famous scientist. The poster will
include a drawing or photo of the
scientist as well as phrases and
illustrations that depict what
important contributions that
person made in the field of science.
The posters will be displayed in the
hall.

Partners in Science

Each Monday a different pair
of students will work together
for the week to complete a science
experiment that follows the
scientific method. They will present
their data and conclusions to the
class that Friday. While some materials
for the experiment may need to be
brought from home, the work will be
done during school hours.

Each six weeks period students
will be expected to earn a minimum
amout of AR points to be determined
by their ZPD reading level from
their May STAR test. A goal grade

Chess

Students will study chess in fifth grade.
Chess requires inductive and
deductive reasoning, problem
solving, recall, analysis, judgment,
decision-making, self-confidence, and
organizational habits.  A chess tournament
with medals, brackets, and four champions
will complete the year in chess instruction.

Famous Speeches
and Posters

Students will read a famous speech,
write a paragraph explaining the
reason or purpose of the speech,
and create a life-size poster of the
presenter. Abraham Lincoln,
Martin Luther King, Jr., and
Patrick Henry are some of the
famous speakers our students use.

Red Ribbon Week

Through class projects such as decorating
classroom doors or working on a drug-free
banner students pledge to make healthy choices and to be a positive role model for
their friends by supporting the mission of Red Ribbon Week. No Use of Illegal Drugs! We pledge to be drug-free!

They will analyze the meaning
and memorize the song

Balloon Racers

In conjunction with our study
on Newton's Laws of Motion, students
will build a lightweight vehicle that is
powered by a deflating balloon. Prizes
will be given for the racers that travel
the longest distance.

through analysis of meaning,
repitition, and the use of meaningful

Rodeo Art

Each student draws a
Western-themed picture.
The pictures are judged by
a committee from the Houston
Rodeo and are given ribbons
for first, second, or third place.
Those chosen as Best of Show or
Gold Medal Winner are taken to be
displayed at the Houston Livestock
Show and Rodeo which is in March.
