WEEK OF FEBRUARY 8-12, 2010

YEARBOOKS:
You couldn't order your yearbook at the beginning of the year, so now is the time. They will only be for sale until February 18th. If you're not sure if you already placed your order or you have any questions, please send an email to rebecca@hallzone.net . Remember your friends at Spicewood by reserving your copy today. Ordering instructions are at www.spicewoodpta.org.

CLASS BASKET:
-  Please remember that Karen Imperato is collecting money for our class basket for the the Silent Auction.  A big THANK YOU to Stacy Westover for picking up some beautiful pottery, Kim Hume for picking up some glasses for the students to decorate, Karen Imperato for collecting funds, and to all three for helping put the basket together!  Also, thank you to the families who have donated money to help create the class basket!  It is greatly appreciated!

LITTLE READERS:
-  PLEASE have your child read their Little Reader books EACH day.  The students have a new incentive to read . . . Treasure Box!  After reading each book, please record the title, etc. on the reading log.  When a child fills up an entire log, they will earn treasure box!
-  Make reading fun!  Have your child read their book backwards or point at individual words that you ask them to look for.  To build comprehension, you can ask questions (Who were the characters?  What did this story make you think about?  Was there a problem?, etc.)
-  These books will be switched out for new ones weekly so they need to be put back in your child's backpack daily after reading!
-  Any questions, please let me know!

THANK YOU:
-  Thank you to the Ayala Family for sending in Froot Loops!  I know you all loved seeing the 100 Froot Loops make their way to your homes!

VALENTINE CARDS:
-  Please remember that your child will need to bring in a Valentine card for each student in the class.  We have 19 students.  They will need to have them here by Wednesday so we can get them passed out!

ITEM NEEDED:
-  We are on our last container of Clorox Wipes!  Help!  I will try and pick some up this weekend, but any donations are also greatly appreciated!

VALENTINE PARTY:
-  We will be having our class Valentine Party on Friday, February 12th!  It will be from 1:45-2:30 pm.  We will be opening Valentine's, playing Bingo, and decorating cookies!  Please feel free to come and join us (no siblings please)!

REPORT CARDS
-  Please familiarize yourself with the expectations in kindergarten by checking out the report card link:  http://www.roundrockisd.org/home/index.asp?page=1581

LANGUAGE ARTS
- The students are going to continue working on using small moments this week!  We will discuss how they a small moment such as in the book, The Snowy Day (playing in the snow) can be stretched to make a book.  Following this, the students will begin trying to stretch out their own small moments to create stories!  We continue to work on sounding out the first letters of words, add correct punctuation, capitalization and spacing.  We have made a list of what Good Writer's need to include in their writing (i.e. spaces, correct punctuation, and capitalization).  The students are being encouraged to use these when writing!
- We continue to work on the Daily 5 during our Language Arts block!  The students are building their independence when they are doing "read to self" and many are using cooperation during "word work" and "read to partner."
-  In reading, the students continue to focus on sounding out the words they are reading!  Here is our list of what good reader's do:  Look at the pictures, Look at the first letter of the word, Use what they know about books (repeating lines, rhyming, etc.), Sound-by-Sound.  We will continue discussing fiction and nonfiction.
-  The Focus Words we have learned are:  a, I, mom, dad, me, the, you, an, and, at, he, an, am, can, do

MATH
- We will continue Measurement this week.  We will use capacity and weight to measure!

PROGRAM OF INQUIRY
