Announcements

      For Evening Learning students are assigned to make a Valentine box, basket, bag (if they already have something that is great!). Students will be exchanging Valentines at our class party next Friday 2/12 (they can be homemade or store bought). Each Valentine should be addressed to their classmates. Here is our list:

·       We will have a Valentine’s Day party for the class that will be on Friday, February 12th beginning at 1:45 until the end of the day.

·       The students earned “quarters for compliments”.  They earned 28 and won a class prize. They voted to wear pajamas on Friday, February 12th. No nightgowns please.

·       Wednesday, February 10th is an EARLY RELEASE DAY!

·       Friday, February 15th there will be NO SCHOOL in observance of President’s Day.

·       Exhibition meetings affect our schedule on the following Tuesdays:                                    2/9, 2/23, 3/9, 3/23, 3/30, 4/13, 4/20

Our Lunch Time will be from 10:45-11:15

Our Specials (PE, MUSIC, ART) Time will be from 11:35-12:25

·       Thank you to Kathleen King for helping our class put their special touch on our class basket for the auction on March 5th at Balcones County Club!

·       Just a reminder that on student’s work:

 TA=Teacher Assisted and

I=they completed their work Independently.

·       We will be going to the library on Friday this week. Please remember to send overdue books on Friday.

·       Please send in all auction donations as soon as possible!  I hope to see you all at the auction!

·       Many of our hand held pencil sharpeners are broken, if you have any that are in working order, we would love to have them for our classroom!

 

What We Are Learning About

 

Math

  • Our focus for the next two weeks is telling time.
  • Students will learn how to tell time to 5 minutes, half hour, and hour.
  • We will continue practicing working on Fractions and Regrouping.

 Reading Workshop (Daily 5)

  • We will be establishing purpose for reading selected texts based upon content to enhance comprehension.
  • We will focus on new comprehension strategies; indentifying clues, using background knowledge, generating questions and re-reading a portion of the text aloud. All of these will be used to monitor comprehension.
  • We will continue to practice our test taking skills by reading a nonfiction passage and answering multiple choices questions that check comprehension.
  • We will practice looking up words in the dictionary and using the GUIDE WORDS to help us!

Unit of Inquiry

    • Our unit of inquiry is called, Sharing the Planet, it is about living and nonliving things and how we rely on living and nonliving things to exist.
    • It will be an inquiry into:

1.    Natural resources and how they are used

2.    How living things depend on the environment to meet their needs

3.    Identifying characteristics of living organisms and nonliving objects

Writing

  • Students will be writing rebus poems to practice finding rhyming words and publishing different types of writings.
  • We will be taking a closer look at dialogue; how it is used in writing and reading and how we incorporate it into our writing.
  • Cursive.

Technology

·       2nd Grade animal focus according to the RRISD TEKS is fish. This focus is designed to provide students with multiple, varied, in-depth experiences. Ss will research a fish from Pebble Go (and online encyclopedia resource for children), they will find information about that fish's habitat, diet, life cycle, adaptations to meet its needs.

Science

·       We will focus on the functions and characteristics of plants this week through an activity that will allow students to use common household goods.

·       We will be focusing on plants this week and understanding its life cycle and their importance in the food chain.
