How long will it take before my child corrects their speech sound in therapy?

Mastery at the conversational level varies with each child. To correct an
individual speech sound, a child will need to go through the following
hierarchy of speech sound development: Auditory discrimination of the
individual sound from other sounds; Production in isolation; Production at
the syllable level; Production at the word level including the initial,
final and medial positions of words; Production of the sound within
Phrases/Sentences; Production of the speech sound in guarded conversational
speech; and Production of the speech sound in conversational speech at an
automatic level which will result in final carryover of the sound. This may
take as early as four months with an older child to two years with a younger
child just to correct one sound in their speech repetoire.
