Here is an email I got from Roots and Shoots organization. We also got a great certificate!
Dear Jo,
Congratulations!

We had discussed doing a creek clean-up this summer. HOWEVER, it has been so hot that we are going to wait until much cooler weather!

This is an email sent to all the teachers at Spicewood:
The whale was finished in the teacher parking lot this weekend. It is the actual size of a whale. If you have time you might want to go out with your class and see how many kids it takes with arms outstretched to be the same size or how long it would take someone to run the length of it, etc.
This was done by Spicewood's Roots and Shoots club. This is Jane Goodall's youth organization. This is our second year. This year the kids made their 10th loan to KIVA which provides small loans to people all around the world. They have loaned to South America, Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. They were the ones that collected sample sized personal care items for the homeless and have adopted a park for Keep Austin Beautiful. They are a small but mighty force!
Enjoy the whale!

We have a park! Here is the email we received confirming our park.
It was great to meet Julie(Mrs. Jacobs) at the park yesterday to look at Shoal Creek to talk about its potential and the vital role your volunteers will play in getting it there. We’re pleased to welcome you as the latest Adopt-a-Creek partner!
I’ve ordered a tile recognizing your commitment to keeping Austin’s creeks clean and beautiful, and will notify you when it has been installed. I’ll also mail you a certificate shortly.
Useful documents and links can be found at the bottom of the Adopt-a-Creek webpage under "Partners".
www.keepaustinbeautiful.org/Adopt-a-Creek Your organization has been added to our list of Adopt-a-Creek groups found on that page and information on organizing cleanups will be sent in separate email in just a couple of minutes.
While we were out at the site I noticed a couple of invasive plant species. More information on these species is included below:
Chinese tallow:

Johnson Grass:

Since the area you’re working in is already very disturbed you can simply pull up young seedlings and then put some native seed where the ground is disturbed,

I will look forward to hearing about your first official cleanup and to posting pictures on our website bragging about your great work. Please let me know if you have any questions, and thanks for getting your group involved!

Here is the response I received from the Roots and Shoots people about our question on helping Japan:
Dear Jo,
Thank you for your interest in supporting Japan. Unfortunately, we are not planning to send any Messages of Hope to Japan.
We have put together a collection of other ways groups can support the citizens of Japan. These ideas will be released in the next issue of the Roots & Shoots eNewsletter, which is slated to come out tomorrow.
All the best,
Stephanie

LAST YEAR'S POSTS
8/16/10
School is getting ready to begin again and with it, Roots and Shoots will begin as well. I am excited about this year! We did receive a certificate from Roots and Shoots over the summer in recognizing the projects that we did last year. I know we will do even better things this year.

What a great Saturday! Thanks to everyone who was able to come and help. Thanks to the parents who made everything go faster. We will start painting the outlines on Thursday. It will be a few weeks before we can schedule another Saturday. Mrs. Jacobs and Ms. Williams will look at their schedules and tell you when this Thursday.

Mrs. June has given us permission to paint the whale!

We had a great meeting and everyone picked up trash around Spicewood. We talked about different projects to do. One was fixing up Tallyrand Park. The other was to create a life-sized picture of a blue whale in the parking lot.
3/25/10
We finally got back on track with our meetings! We finished one birdhouse and are very close on two others. Part of the group picked up trash around the building. We had an update on our Roots and Shoots loans and had our picture taken for the yearbook. A busy day!
3/2/10
Check out some new links on the links page!
2/25/10
We took some time to catch up in our journals and then split into two groups. This worked out great! One group picked up trash around the building while the other half worked on the birdhouses. Then we switched. Two of the birdhouses are almost complete!
2/18/10
We had a great meeting today! The birdhouses are starting to look like birdhouses.
2/7/2010
New books have been added to the Roots and Shoots library. Check them out!
2/4/2010
We had a productive meeting this week and began working on our birdhouses!
1/25/10
The Roots and Shoots library is now
open! There is a box by Ms. Williams'
door with all the books. If you would
like to check one out, put your name
and the date on the card in the book
and place it in the holder on the
outside of the box.
