7th and 8th Grade Art Students Visit the
MFAH Exhibit of Impressionism and Post Impressionism
from The National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.
I celebrate our 7th and 8th grade Art students behavior, focus and
concentration at the MFAH field trip 3-3-2011. Docents and onlookers
complimented them on their knowledge, introspective commentary and
excellent behavior. We were the first to enter the museum, had excellent
docents, and our students learned a great deal through them and advanced
planning. They were silent and in awe of the film on the chine mural
created by gunpowder.
We saw other visiting school groups who couldn't compare to our classy SFDS
students.
Prior to our visit, we spent 4-5 days learning about the Impressionists, Post
Impressionists and their rebellion against the French Salons expected
standards and classical style. An art bulletin board was devoted to the
exhibit and subjects. Students were given additional information in the an
art vocabulary handout and their modified assignment. Students also had
access to the exhibit catalogue both before and after their assignment was due.
Were also able to view the Chinese exhibit, Odyssey mural and film of it’s
creation by the artist who used gunpowder. If you have an opportunity to
visit these exhibits, we highly recommend these important segments of the
middle school art curriculum.
