I'm a 7th-generation native Texan. I love Texas. I was born in College Station, spent most of my
childhood about half an hour outside of Houston, then moved to Austin and have been in and around
central Texas for most of my adult life. I graduated with highest honors from UT with a degree in
philosophy and a minor in math, then went to graduate school at UC San Diego a few years later,
where I studied philosophy and theoretical linguistics. In the interim I've backpacked all over the
western United States, worked in two national parks (Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon), become a
pretty good surfer, skier and snowboarder, and learned to play guitar, paint and write. I once sold
most everything I owned, got on a bus with my guitar, my laptop and a suitcase and moved to
Guadalajara, Mexico, where I got so sick a month later I had to fly back and go to the hospital. That
effectively ended that adventure along with any subsequent desire to visit Mexico. At any rate, it
wasn't a total loss and I got some good stories out of it. My biggest goal in life is to make the most
of the years I have on this planet, and I try not to waste any time on things that aren't particularly
rewarding or enriching. Of course, "enriching" is a broad term that encompasses a wide range of
experience, but one thing it doesn't encompass for me is having a television or caring what Paris
Hilton does or who America's next top model is. As my students I encourage you to kill your
television as soon as possible and pick up a book instead. You'll be glad you did.
To teach my kids that math is a whole lot more interesting than is immediately apparent, as well as
being tremendously useful. Besides being the foundation of nearly every piece of technology we have,
studying it is also some of the best exercise you can do for your mind. If you study
it hard you'll benefit from it no matter what you end up doing in life.
