Health Science NewsFlash

Update May 17th: Wow, it is hard to believe the school  year is coming to a close. Thank you students and parents for a wonderful year. I really enjoyed teaching the CNA program and visiting the hospital this year. You have accomplished a lot....your CNA certification, your Healthcare Provider CPR and a more realistic foundation of the hospital/healthcare. Make sure and use your Finals RV worksheet to help you prepare for your final exam next week! Finally, I am asking all HOSA members and anyone who would be so inclined to help a good cause.....to bring one dozen eggs to B132 in the morning. This egg donation goes to the "egging" fundraiser tomorrow so that we can help our Wonderful HOSA member Grace Truong attend National Competition in June!! Thank you for supporting HOSA and Health Science! Don't forget to return any $$ from ticket sales, remaining tickets, and name list to B132 in the morning. Go Tigers!!

Update April 29th: Reminders! Make sure your scrubs, etc....are ready to go for the morning. This week will be our last visits to the hospital, then 3 weeks until summer break:) Tomorrow, Monday 30th is an A day!! You will also be receiving progress reports this week. Please come to tutorials before school to take care of msg assignments, etc. I am at school by 8:10 every morning. I can stay after school most days also....just let me know. There will be a test Friday May 4th for Aday & Monday May 7th for Bday. See study ideas under the announcements section of my teacher web. Keep up the Good Work, you will soon be Seniors!! and a few of you will soon be College Students!!

Update April 23rd: All  A-day grades are updated. Please check your grades and come by after school if you are missing assignments or need to turn in assignments. Also, please turn in the permission form for "And The Band Played On" by next class. Thank you for your kindness while I was out part of last week to be with my family! The substitutes spoke highly of all classes.........

Update April 17th: No scrubs will be needed for this Wedn & Thurs. My grandmother has passed away and I will going to spend time with my parents & family. Please bring your Radiology Work Sheet to class Wedn & Thurs so that you can complete it during class. It will be due Wedn (Aday) & Thurs (Bday). Remember, next week is TAKS week!!

Update March 28th: Reminders!! Practicum applications due to Mrs. Tingle in B132 by March 30th, this Friday...by 4:15. Also don't forget to complete well your Cardiac Rehab and Cardiac Cath Assignment. This will be a Test grade due Friday (Aday) and Monday (Bday). The students have been very professional at the hospital and enthusiastic to absorb the healthcare employees, patients and facility!!

Update March 15th: What to send you a reminder that on Monday March 19th (B Day), students will be starting their hospital clinical rotations. Students will be shadowing and observing the healthcare providers on vaious units. The morning classes will visit Round Rock Medical Center and the afternoon class will visit St Davids Georgetown Hospital. All transportation will be provided by bus during school hours (class). It is important to be on time to class and to be in proper professional attire (clean, pressed scrubs, white clean shoes, hair pulled back, only small stud earring and a watch with a second hand, your badge, a pen and your journal form)!! Enjoy the remainder of your spring break, but prepare for clinicals before Sunday night:) See you soon!!

Update Feb 21st: The handouts section has been updated. Hospital paperwork is Pass Due!! Please turn in any missing paperwork asap. See the announcement section for information on the next test this Friday Feb 24th & Monday Feb 27th (bday). Update Feb 19th: The grading cycle for the 4th six weeks ended Friday, Feb 17th. Assignments are being graded and entered so that verification of grades can take place Monday Feb 20th at 4:30 pm. Therefore all assignments need to be turned in (emailed) by today Sunday Feb 19th so that they can be graded. If you are lacking any part of the the health career assignment (job research, interviewing, resume), please email it to me asap before 10pm Sunday Feb 19th! Have a nice day off tomorrow!!

Update Feb 3rd: All Health Science students should bring at least 1 box or bag of cereal to support Stony Point in beating Round Rock High in the Cereal Bowl.....Cereal must be to B132 by Tues Morning Feb 7th!! Let's reach our goal of 36 boxes for the Health Science Classes. Congrats to all students for earning their Health Care Provider CPR certification! I have seen a nice growth in your CPR skills from last year. Finally, your hospital paperwork needs to be completed and returned by Monday (Aday) and Tues (Bday).....Have a wonderful Weekend!!

Update Jan 16th: Read below the  updates for Jan 8th! Meet at 7am in front of school, bring your original Social Security Card and badge. Also HOSA t-shirt $$ due by Friday Jan 20th....T-shirts are $12 each. The best day to bring t-shirt money is Wedn this week. You can pay before or after school and during Health Science Classes!! There is a spring HOSA drive if you did not get to join in the Fall. However, the cost is still $25. The check should be made to SPHS HOSA and all checks must have a driver's license #. Update Jan 8th: Reminders.....1st group of students will be testing bright and early Monday the 9th. Students will meet me at front of the school at 7am!! Please be in uniform....don't forget to wear light undergarmets,  your badge, your watch, pull hair back....bring your stethoscope just in case, pen, paper or small notepad, 2 pencils....not mechanical. MOST IMPORTANTLY..... You Must Have Your Original Social Security Card and other form of ID used which was the Badge for most. Make sure and locate your social security card before going to bed since we are meeting at 7am....too early to be looking for items. Best of Luck to The First Day Testers!! eat a good breakfast, bring drinks, lunch, and something to do during your down time. You All Will Do Great, I Have No Doubt:).....see you soon!

I am reminding you to read over your CNA handbook, and paying special attention to the critical elements in bold. I have also placed a review of 25 questions under handouts....It is the last item under handouts. I will post the key tomorrow or Thurs! See you next year!

Update Dec 9th: Handouts and Calendar on my teacher web have been updated! Remember to come see me starting today after school if you need to sign for exemption. Per District....You must come to my class on the day of exam even if you are exempting. Once I take attendance then  you will report to the cafeteria. Regular attendance will be taken all days!! Read under announcements for study ideas for the final exam, check calendar for exam date/time, go to handouts for notes, vocab, etc....
I must mention that I fully enjoyed taking the students to clinical at Estrella Oaks. They were very professional and I saw such a growth and increase in comfort in caring for the geriatric population. I hope the experience was as meaningful as I felt it to be. I am looking forward to the students earning their Nursing Assistant Certification in January. Please ask your student what date they are taking the exam and put this on your calendar. We will meet here in B132 at 7am the morning of the exam. The students will spend most of that day at Estrella. I will let attendance know that this is an excused absence from any other classes they miss that day. They will have time in class and Estrella to work on any assignments they may be missing. Students, remember to review your handbook over the holiday break, practice any skills you can, and use imagery to review skill steps. This will help you keep fresh on the skills and info! Nov 30th Update: Reminder that $93 Money Order or Cashier's Check is Due by Friday Dec 2nd. The testing folks do Not accept personal checks. This money order or Cashier's Check must be made payable to NACES Plus Foundation. Thank you for supporting you supporting in working toward their Certification as a Nursing Assistant. We will start testing Jan 9th, however all paperwork has to be turned in before the break. Please encourage them to review their handbook, guidelines and skills as much as possible over the holiday break coming up. The first week of January will be skills, skills, skills review!! Update Nov 15th: Wow! I just have to say again how awesome the students (you) are doing at clinical.  You are making a wonderfull impact on many residents who so enjoy seeing you and talking with you. I also can see the knowledge and comfort being gained through this time spent caring for and talking with the residents. As we move forward with clinials, I am preparing the paperwork for the Certified Nursing Assistant Exam the students will take in January. I ask that you turn in your $93 money order or cashiers check by Dec 2nd to me. This must be made payable to NACES Plus Foundation. No personal checks allowed! Also, if you have not turned in your first and second choices for testing please do so this week. Remember, some A day students will need to test on a B day. There just are not enough A day slots available. Each test date, the 7 students testing will meet at the school and be ready to leave by 7:10 am. I will be driving us to Estrella with a school suburban.

Update Nov 10th: Journal Assignment due Nov 11th, Friday for Aday, and Nov 14th Monday for Bday. Also, here is some information regarding the Social Security Office in Georgetown if you were one of the students needing to get a new Social Security Card due to signature or name issues. Social Security Adminiatration  104 Parkview Drive   Georgetown TX 78626, Phone # 1-877-531-4699. Their hours of operation are 9am-3:30. I was told the card takes about 2 weeks to get once they order/process it. You will need to complete an application called Form SS5, and will need a valid ID. They prefer a driver's license but you can use a student ID. However, you must be present if using an ID. You must also be present if over 19. You parents can take care of this for you if you are under 18 and have a Driver's License. I hope this helps. You may be able to obtain more information from secure.ssa.gov ......If you are needing to get a SS card, you will need to take care of this immediately so that all can be processed for your testing.

Update October 30th: Want to do something nice? You can make a few Happy Halloween Cards for our residents at Estrella. This would be a great activity to get your younger siblings involved in also. Feel free to make some even if you are A day students and bring them by my room, B132 in the morning. We will be happy to deliver them to the residents tomorrow!!!

Update October 29th: I have placed an assignment under handouts. It is Journal Assignment #1. You may print it and answer the questions thoroughly in complete sentences. You may type or hand write your responses and may use your own paper so that you have adequate space for your responses! This will be due Tues Nov 1st for Aday, and Wedn Nov 2nd for Bday. Reminder: Next week is the last week for the 2nd 6 weeks (it was only 5 weeks long). I want to again compliment you all on your professionalism at clinical and also your willingness to work hard in helping the residents with many different needs. You are doing a great job and I'm proud of you!!

Update October 19th: The PB & J Bowl ends Thurs 4:15. This is an annual event where SPHS collects Jelly (this year) and RRHS (Peanut Butter). The school that collects the most jars Wins and is announced at the SPHS vs. RRHS game this Friday. The items collected are donated to the RR Serving Center Food Bank, to help serve our very own community! So please support SPHS in BEATING RRHS and bring your JELLY no later than Thurs 4:15!!! Go Tigers!!

Update October 17th: Tomorrow is our first clinical rotation. Please refer to your check list to make sure you are all ready. It never hurts to be a little early to class to make sure you are ready. Some students are missing their shaving homework assignment....please bring asap. The bedmaking assignment will be due by the end of Thurs. I am here every morning early this week for tutorials and every day after school except Tues. Come to tutorials to complete your bedmaking assignment or to finish up your Vital Signs Graph. Eat a good meal before clinical!!

Update Sept 23rd: Reminders for those who still need to get their TB skin test and Flu shot. Also remember that I will need a copy of your social security card for the CNA application process. You will need to bring your ID (clinical badge) and Social Security card with you on the day of testing, but I need a copy asap. Students are learning to shave right now and will be looking to assist family members with shaving for practice if possible:) Have a great weekend!

Update Sept 19th: Reminders.....Skills Test on Wedn Sept 21st for Aday, and Thurs Sept 22nd for Bday. All students will have handwashing and communicating with resident as half of the skills test. The remaining 50% will come from one of the skills we have completed. Read through your handbook and Procedural Guidelines (as well as the Procedure checklist given today). I am not grading for speed but for proper steps and safety. I will be available Tues 9/20 at 8am-8:55 for tutorials, as well as Wedn 8am and 4:15pm if needed.

Update Sept 6th:
           Hello! Wow, hard to believe that progress reports come out next week for the first 3 weeks. It has been a wonderful start to the year and I want to say Thank you Students and Parents for getting all the requirements taken care of for Health Science. I realize it has required your effort, time and money to make this all fall in place....beginning with the back ground checks, required shots, etc. Please feel free to contact me with any questions. Also, a reminder that the fees are due by Friday the 9th so that I can get the scrubs ordered and back in time for our clinicals (Mid October, tentatively). 
            Parent's night is Monday Sept 12th at 6:30pm. However, I will be available in B132 from 5:30-6:15 for any questions, classroom tours, etc instead of the regular scheduled time. I will not be available at 6:30 due to a conflict in time (my son's first football game starts at 6:30pm this same evening). If you plan on attending parent's night and are not able to come between 5:30-6:15, I will be happy to meet with you another day before or after school. Update Sept 1st: Important Reminder....Vocabulary List #1 Quiz Friday 9/2 for Aday, and Tues 9/5 for Bday. Also Forms from first day packet are due today and tomorrow for Bday. I do understand that some are still working on shot records, immunizations. The school nurse will give you a print out for $1 and I will make you an extra copy for your own records. The flu shot will be required also but I am asking that you have this by Sept 23rd. Thank you guys for your positive attitude through all that you have had to do to get ready! You rock!

Update Aug 30th: I wanted to pass along some additional information that may be of use to some! The Round Rock Health Clinic located at 211 Commerce offers walk in on Tues and Thurs 8-11 and 1-4. They also have appt that can be made. The TB skin test can not be given on Thurs due to the fact it needs to be read in 48-72 hours by the clinic. The school nurse is also able to read this if you have the form with you. Their phone number is 248-3257. I was told that the TB skin test is $20 and all other immunizations are $10 for whatever you need (not per shot). Hope this helps, Mrs. Hart

Update August 24th: Thank You!! for a wonderful first 2 days of school. I am very excited about this year and helping you earn your CNA, along with learning more about hospitals and health careers. Remember to schedule your back ground check/finger printing appt this week and bring me the date of your appt if you still need this requirement. Also be thinking about a good time to get your TB skin test in the next couple of weeks. Bring me a copy of your TB test once it is completed. Go Tigers!!

Update August 19th: I have received many back ground check reports back. However, I am still needing quite a few. If you have not made arrangements for your back ground check you will need to bring to school the first 2 days proof of your fingerprinting appt. This is a requirement in order to be able to stay in Health Science. I am posting the instructions under my handouts section.

Homework and Class Assignments grading policy for Health Science
1. Test/Major Projects 45%
2. Daily Work/Homework/minor projects 30%
3. Quiz 25%

Remember the late policy for homework. Following is the reduction of points for late assignments
(this is for each day school is in session, whether you have my class that day or not):

HS
1 school day late starts at a 90%
2 school days late starts at an 80%
3 school days late starts at a 70%
4 school days late starts at a 60%
 Late Assignments will not be accepted after this 4 day grace period.


Stat Starter Warm-Up Assignments daily

Stat Starter (Warm-up) daily assignment must be completed during the first 5-10 minutes of class. If you are tardy and unable to complete by the time turned in, you will be expected to attend tutorials for an alternative assignment. Usually 1 stat starter will be graded every week.
