Dear Parents,

We are happy that your cadet has chosen to enroll in your Stony Point High School Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC) Program.  To ensure your child is successful in the program we think it is important that both of you are aware that NJROTC is not just a class, but at program that offers the opportunity to learn leadership and citizenship in a regimented and strictly structured environment.  To be successful a student must attend and pass all academic classes, participate in the physical fitness program, learn to work as a member of a team performing close order drill movements, maintain specified grooming standards, and properly wear and maintain a NJROTC uniform at least one day a week and when prescribed for other occasions.

As you know the program is sponsored jointly by you school district, and your United States Navy.  All books and uniforms are provided at no cost to you by the Navy, but must be returned at the end of the year.  While books and uniforms are provided at no cost, there are some peripheral costs associated with your child’s participation in the program.  They are as follows:

a.       Uniform maintenance: Some of the uniform items are dry clean only and the cost of cleaning them will be your responsibility.

b.       Activity fee:  to expose the students to new and career enhancing experiences we will take them on several field trips. To help defray the cost of transportation and entry fees we collect a non-refundable activity fee of seventy dollars ($70) at the start of the school year.  This will be the only time this year we ask you for money.

c.        Cost associated with grooming standards:  To participate in the program students must have a Navy regulation haircut at each weekly uniform and personnel inspection. The program also prohibits facial hair (mustaches are ok), so you may have to provide your child with shaving gear.

d.       Physical fitness shorts and shirts: For uniformity during physical fitness your child will be issued shorts, shirt, and a full sweat suit set.  If these items are lost or misplaced the cadet will be required to pay to replace the items.

e.        Cost of meals: On occasion you will need to give your child money or provide a lunch for certain field trips.

We already have a field trip planned to Randolph AFB in San Antonio, Texas 28 Oct 2011.  All cadets will attend, and we are currently seeking funding to make this happen.  We look forward to speaking with all parents early in the school year.

Should additional information be required you may contact the NJROTC office during normal school hours at (512) 428-7278 or 428-7279

Sincerely,
