Please note that some elective classes will not earn academy credit. (Example:  Landscape Design) Please refer the the strand checklist on the Academy Graduation Form for this information. Also, certain elective courses may not be offered every year. (Example:   Astronomy) Please check with your counselor for more specific infomation.

Science Courses

All science courses shall include at least 40% hands-on

laboratory investigations and field work using

appropriate scientific inquiries. A minimum of three

science credits are required for graduation.

 

4011 Biology 1 Credit

Prerequisite: None

Description: This course is a laboratory-oriented

survey of the living world. Students will collect and

analyze biological data, investigate career opportunities,

and apply biological concepts to real life applications.

 

4012 Pre-AP Biology 1 Credit

Prerequisite:

1. Freshman or Sophomore

2. Credit in/or concurrent enrollment in Algebra I

Description: Students meet and go beyond the

requirements for Biology and engage in quantitative

analysis of data. Algebraic thinking and problem solving

are essential. Independent research is required.

 

4121 Integrated Physics and Chemistry

1 Credit

Prerequisite:

1. Freshman or Sophomore

2. May not take IPC after receiving credit for Chemistry

or Physics

Description: This course develops scientific process

skills, algebraic thinking, and problem-solving in the

context of matter, energy, force and motion.

 

4313 AP Biology 1 Credit

Prerequisite:

1. Junior or Senior

2. Credit in Biology and Chemistry

Description: This course is college-level, laboratory oriented,

and designed to prepare students for the AP

Biology exam. Emphasis is on molecules and cells,

Description: This course is designed to prepare

students for the IB Standard-level Biology exam.

Students will gain the conceptual and factual

knowledge and analytical skills to deal critically with

the rapidly changing science of biology. Note: The

course is designed to prepare the student for

Biology Standard Level IB examination.

 

4125 IB Biology Higher Level 1 Credit

2. Credit in two high school science courses

3. Credit in standard level IB Biology or AP Biology

Description: This course is laboratory-oriented

study, observation, and exploration of complex

biological phenomena and processes. Note:

Students who successfully complete this course are

eligible to take the higher level IB Biology exam.

 

4132 Chemistry 1 Credit

2. One credit of high school science

3. Credit in Algebra I and Credit in/or concurrent

enrollment in Geometry

Description: This course requires application of

algebraic reasoning and problem-solving in the

study of matter and energy, chemical reactions, and

kinetic theory. Career opportunities, environment

impacts, and energy issues are explored.

 

4133 Pre-AP Chemistry 1 Credit

Prerequisite:

1. Sophomore with concurrent enrollment in

Algebra II

2. Junior or Senior with 2 credits of high school

science, credit in/or concurrent enrollment in

Algebra II

Description: Students must master all

requirements for Chemistry and engage in

exploration of chemical concepts to greater depth

and complexity using critical thinking and problem

solving skills.

 

4334 AP Chemistry 1 Credit

Prerequisite:

1. Junior or Senior

2. Credit in Chemistry

Description: This course is laboratory-oriented,

college freshman-level chemistry course of

theoretical chemistry concepts. Laboratory

experiments emphasize student analysis of

laboratory data and documented reports. Note:

College credit can be achieved by demonstrating

competencies on the College Board AP

Description: This course is laboratory-oriented,

college freshman-level chemistry course of

Description: This course is laboratory-oriented

study of organic chemistry including nomenclature,

isomerism, substitution and elimination, alcohols,

ethers, spectroscopy, alkenes, atomic compounds,

organic acids, and biochemistry. Note: Students

who successfully complete this course are eligible

to take the higher level IB Chemistry exam.

 

4241 Physics 1 Credit

Prerequisite:

1. Junior or Senior

2. Two credits in high school science

3. Credit in/or concurrent enrollment in Algebra II

Description: This course includes the study of

mechanics, thermodynamics, electricity and

magnetism, light, sound, waves, and modern

physics. It includes multiple step problem solving

and graph analysis.

 

4242 Pre-AP Physics 1 Credit

Prerequisite:

1. Credit in/or concurrent enrollment in Precalculus

Description: This course includes the study of

mechanics, thermodynamics, electricity and

magnetism, light, sound, waves, and modern

physics. The course emphasis is problem solving

and application of principles.

 

4343 AP Physics B 1 Credit

Prerequisite:

1. Junior or Senior

2. Credit in or concurrent enrollment in Precalculus

3. Credit in Physics or Pre-AP Physics

Description: This is a college-level trigonometrybased

physics course. Emphasis is on critical

thinking and problem-solving techniques. This

course at the college-level is intended for students

who do not plan to study engineering or the

physical sciences in college. Note: The course is

designed to prepare the student for AP Physics B

College Board examination.

 

4344 IB Physics Standard Level

4345 AP Physics C 1 Credit

Prerequisite:

1. Concurrent enrollment in Calculus

2. Credit in Physics

Description: This is a college calculus-based physics

course that includes the study of mechanics, electricity,

and magnetism. Emphasis is on content, critical

thinking, as well as problem-solving techniques. The

course is intended for students who intend to study

engineering or the physical sciences in college. Note:

The curriculum designed for the 4345 course will

prepare the student for the “C” level College Board AP

examination for college credit. Students may elect to

take the “B” or “C” level College Board AP examination

for college credit.

 

4346 IB Physics Higher Level 1 Credit

IB Campuses

Prerequisite:

1. Senior

2. Credit in Precalculus (credit or concurrent in Calculus

recommended)

3. Credit in AP Physics B or C or IB Standard Level

Physics

Description: This course includes the study of

advanced topics in all areas of classical physics as well

as options such as astrophysics, communications,

electromagnetic waves, relativity, medical physics, and

particle physics. Note: The course is designed to

prepare the student for the IB Higher Level Physics

examination.

 

4352 Pre-IB Accelerated Science I 1 Credit

IB Campuses

Prerequisite:

1. Freshman only

2. Credit in Algebra I, concurrent enrollment in Pre-AP

Geometry

3. Must meet IB program entry criteria requirements and

plan to take an IB HL science class

Description: This class is the first year of a two-year

sequence for students planning to enroll in an IB HL

science class. The course includes the full curriculum of

Pre-IB Biology, and the first half of Pre-IB Chemistry

curriculum. Note: When coupled with Pre-IB

Accelerated science II (sophomore year), students will

earn three credits of Pre-IB science (Biology, Chemistry

and Physics) in a two-year period.

 

4353 Pre-IB Accelerated Science II 1 Credit

Prerequisite:

1. Sophomores only

2. Credit in Pre-IB Accelerated Science I

3. Must meet IB program entry criteria requirements and

plan to take an IB HL science class

Description: This class is the second year of a twoyear

sequence for students planning to enroll in an IB

HL science class. This course includes the second half

4404 Aquatic Science 1 Credit

Prerequisite:

1. Junior or Senior

2. Two credits in high school science

Description: This course is laboratory-oriented

study of freshwater and marine environments.

Studies include the geological, biological, physical,

and chemical properties of aquatic systems.

Dissection and field research are required.

 

4408 Honors Aquatic Science 1 Credit

MHS Only

Prerequisite:

1. Junior or Senior

2. Credit in Biology

3. Credit in Chemistry or Physics

Description: Honors Aquatic Science is a science

elective for students with keen interest in Aquatic

science and who intend to pursue science at the

college level. Independent research projects and

presentation of projects is required.

 

4405 Environmental Systems 1 Credit

Prerequisite:

1. Junior or Senior

2. Two credits in high school science

Description: This course is a laboratory and issue

oriented course that prepares student to be

environmentally aware and active. Outdoor field

work is mandatory and integrated with community

awareness. Career opportunities are integrated into

the instruction.

 

4407 AP Environmental Science 1 Credit

Prerequisite:

1. Junior or Senior

2. Two credits in high school science

Description: This course is a college-level,

laboratory-oriented course. Concepts include:

interdependence of Earth’s systems and human

interactions and effects on the environment. Note:

The course is designed to prepare the student for

the AP Environmental Science College Board

examination.

 

4510 Astronomy 1 Credit

Prerequisite:

1. Junior or Senior

2. Two credits in high school science

3. Two credits in high school math including

Geometry

Description: This course is a laboratory-oriented

study of historical and modern astronomy concepts.

Students apply knowledge of physics, geology,

biology, chemistry, and geometry.

 

4511 Geology, Meteorology, & Oceanography

1 Credit

Prerequisite:

1. Junior or Senior

2. Two credits in high school science

Description: This course is a laboratory-oriented

study of physical characteristics and conditions of

Earth systems including geology, characteristics of

the atmosphere, characteristics of oceans, and

energy interactions.

 

5424 Principles of Technology I 1 Credit

Prerequisite:

1. Junior or Senior

2. Two credits in science

3. Credit for Algebra I

Description: This course takes a hands-on

approach to teaching physics and mathematics. It is

designed for college-bound students and for those

students planning a technical career. Note: This

course does not count as a technology credit.

5425 Principles of Technology II 1 Credit

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Principles of

Technology I

Description: This course is a continuation of

Principles of Technology I. Principles of Technology

II takes a hands-on approach to teaching physics

and mathematics for college-bound students or for

a technical career. Note: The student may elect to

count this course as one credit in science. Note:

This course does not count for Technology

Application credit.

 

5612 Scientific Research and Design – Focus:

Environmental Science (Honors) 1 Credit

Prerequisite:

1. Junior or Senior

2. Two credits of high school science

Description: Students review scientific literature,

design a research project, and plan final products

that will involve formal presentation to

representatives of the scientific community. Note:

Students enrolled in this course will receive science

credit when taught by a science instructor.

 

5613 Scientific Research & Design: Sports

Medicine 1 Credit

Prerequisite:

1. Sophomore, Junior or Senior

2..One credit of high school science and

concurrent enrollment in a second science course

3. Teacher approval

Description: The course introduces students to the

profession of athletic training. Students will work

under the direction of a licensed trainer, be required

to satisfy an after school time commitment, and be

eligible to obtain CPR and first aid certification.

Note: Students enrolled in this course will receive

science credit when taught by science a instructor.

This course does not confer honors credit.

 

5614 Scientific Research & Design: Advanced

Biotechnology (Honors) 1 Credit

Prerequisite:

1. Credit in Chemistry

Description: This course will develop biotechnology

laboratory skills in genetic manipulation of

plant tissues, ethical practices, tissue production

systems, nucleic acid and protein techniques,

management systems, and quality control. Tech

5615 Scientific Research & Design: Advanced

Clinical Skills (Honors) 1 Credit

Description: This course will train students in

advanced clinical skills. Upon completion of this course

students are qualified by hospital standards to function

as clinical technicians. With CNA and EMT-B

certificates through HST III, employers may start CT on

through an integration of biology, chemistry, and

physics. Students will study the structures and functions

Human Systems

Description: In this course students learn to

measure physiological processes, evaluate

5270 Introduction to Veterinary Assistant

Technology 1 Credit

Prerequisite: Junior or Senior

Description: This course provides training to the

unlicensed veterinary assistant field. It includes

animal handling and restraint, health and safety,

sanitation, surgical preparation, anatomy,

physiology, medical terminology, infectious

diseases, instrument and equipment identification,

vaccine preparation and injection techniques, laws

and ethics, and veterinary office procedures.

 

5550 Medical Terminology ½ Credit

Prerequisite: None

Description: A course designed to develop a

working knowledge of the language of medicine.

Students acquire word-building skills by learning

prefixes, suffixes, roots, and abbreviations. By

related terms to body systems, students identify

proper use of words in a medical environment.

Knowledge of medical terminology enhances the

student's ability to successfully secure employment

or pursue advanced education in health care. Tech

5560 Introduction to Health Science Technology

Prerequisite: None

Description: This course gives an overview of the

therapeutic, diagnostic, environment and

informational systems of the health care industry.

The focus is on career exploration, leadership

development, ethical and legal issues, and the

history, economics, and trends in financing health

care. Students will develop a concept of health and

wellness from the perspective of a health consumer

as well as a potential professional in the health care
