![]() The 7 HabitsHere at Teravista, we believe that every child should be well rounded and it is our job to prepare them for the world outside of our school walls. So, we have adopted a leadership program called "The 7 Habits" by Stephen R. Covey. Throughout the year and hopefully even at home, you will here all of us talking about these habits and learning about them in grave detail. ___________________________________________________________________________ You might be asking... What are the 7 habits? Well, listed below is a short synopses of each habit in the perspective of a child or even adult: #1 - Be Proactive I strive to be a responsible person and take initiative. I CHOOSE my actions, attitudes, and moods. I do not blame others for my wrong actions. I do the right thing without being asked, even when no one is looking. #2 - Begin with the End In Mind I plan ahead and set goals. I do things that have meaning and make a difference in the world around me. #3 - Put First Things First I spend my time on things that are the most important. I set priorities, make a schedule, and follow my individual plan. I strive to be disciplined and organized. #4 - Think Win-Win I balance courage for getting what I want with consideration for what others want. I make deposits in others' "Emotional Bank Accounts". When conflict arises, I look for another alternative. #5 - Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood I listen to other people's ideas and feelings. I am confident in voicing my ideas but I try to see things from their viewpoints. I listen to others without interrupting and look in their eyes while talking. #6 - Synergize I value other people's strengths and learn from them. I get along well with others, even people who are different than me. I am humble and work well in groups. I seek out other people's ideas to solve problems because I know that by teaming with others we can create better solutions than any one of us alone. #7 - Sharpen the Saw I take care of my body by eating right, exercising, and getting sleep. I spend time with family and friends. I learn in lots of ways and lots of places, not just at school. I take time to find meaningful ways to help others. Cited from the book, "The Leader in Me" , by Stephen R. Covey (page 21 - 22) ___________________________________________________________________________ You will in fact see these same habits listed on the bottom of our daily behavior sheet. Our 2nd Grade Team will be on the look out for children practicing these same habits here at school and letting you know about them when ever they occur. If you have any further questions about this leadership program, how we implement these habits, or how they are used in our classroom - feel free to come by so that we can show you how this is such an essential piece to making our campus the most effective it can be!
