May students bring a snack to school?
Most definitely. Please send your child with a healthy snack
daily. Make sure it is something that can be eaten while
students are working. Also, please do not send foods that need
silverware. Foods like pretzels, goldfish, crackers, fruits, and
vegetables make great snacks.
May students bring a drink to school?
Yes, but please only send water. Also, please make sure that the
drink you provide has a top that can be securely fastened. We
want to keep our classroom and building looking spectacular.
How will behavior be documented?
Teachers will communicate with parents daily about student
behavior using a recording sheet. On this behavior sheet, your
child's teacher will be able to give you specific feedback and
clarification on your child's daily behavior. You will also have
the opportunity to write back to your child's teacher commenting
about the specified behavior or asking for further clarification.
We ask that all parents look over their child's behavior daily
and provide your initials as confirmation.
What about grades?
Report cards come out every nine weeks. Second grade report
cards are similar to K and 1st grade report cards. It is
developmental and a rubric is used to determine whether a child
is at a stage 1, 2, 3, or 4. A stage 2 means that a child is
working toward end of year mastery. This means that your child is
making good progress with our guided help and close supervision.
A 3 on a report card means that your child is showing mastery in
that area with VERY MINIMAL help or supervision. In other words,
your child is accomplishing / exhibiting a skill with out any
reminders or prompting from myself or another teacher. Most
children will score 2's at the beginning of the year. The grades
your child's receives on classroom assignments does not
necessarily correlate to what you may see on their report card.
For example, if your child is bringing home assignments with
scores of 3 or 4, it does not automatically mean that they will
recieve a 3 or 4 on their report card. The report card is based
on a continuum and is reflective of our RRISD second grade report
card standards.
Number grades and rubrics may be used on some student work, as
well as the check system listed below:
Grading Equivalences:
4 - 100
3 - 80 - 99%
2 - 70 - 79%
1 - 70 or below
What is Tiger Time?
Each day this time is set aside so that teachers can help small
groups of students. During tutorial time students may be working
on remediation skills, enrichment activities, or catching up on
incomplete work.
What about Tuesday Folders?
Please review the work in your child's Tuesday folder. I usually
have students or myself correct their work (in a colored marker
or pen) before it goes home. If a paper is below a one, I will
ask you to sign the paper and return the copy to me. This is to
let you know how they are struggling in the classroom. I will
usually send home additional work for them to work on to
reinforce this skill.
