Welcome to 8th Grade Science

Eighth grade science is an integrated chemistry and physics class. Students will need to have a calculator for the class, as there is a lot of math involved in the class.

August 26-28

Wednesday - Brief overview of procedures

Thursday - Get books -do assignment related to text book

Friday - Go over class rules and safety rules

September 7 - 11

Monday - Labor Day

Tuesday - Completion of lab on water drops on a penny. Using different variables and predicting the outcome.

Wednesday - Go over the difference between dependent and independent variables in an experiment. Get 10 different scenarios to find the different variables.

Thursday - lab on Candles in a jar. Students decide on their problem to solve and the variables. They also must decide on what needs to be controlled in the lab.

Friday - Completion of the candles in the jar lab.

September 14 -18

Monday - Completion of the bubble lab where students must design their own problem to solve using bubbles

Tuesday - Completion of the writting of the lab and the graphs.

Wednesday - Communicating data orally. Using a mystery scenario students need to communicate clues and solve the mystery.

Thursday - Test on scientific method, safety, and metrics.

Friday - Start of chapter 2. doing the vocabulary for the unit.

September 21-25

Monday - Notes on matter

Tuesday - Mystery mass, by using the mass of one penny they must determine how many pennies are in a film canister.

Wednesday - Identify the difference between mass and weight of different objects and graph the results

Thursday - Complete the graphs for each of the previous mass labs. Discussion of density (mass/volume)

Friday - Lab on the density of five different kinds of balls.

September 28 -October 2

Monday - Density problems (20) calculators needed.

Tuesday - Density of 8 different balls - finding the volume and mass of 8 different balls and predicting whether of not they will float or sink in water.

Wednesday - Continuation of the density of ball lab.

Thursday - Lab on density of solids and liquids

Friday - Completion of lab on the density of solids and liquids.

October 5 - 9

Monday - Density test

Tuesday - Review of chemical and physical properties

Wednesday - Completion of the matter paragraph. Identifying chemical and physical changes and properties.

Thursday - Lab on chemical changes. Hydrogen peroxide and liver and the chemical reaction that takes place

Friday - Completion of lab and graphs

October 26 - 30

Monday - 20 questions on the states of matter

Tuesday - Notes on the states of matter

Wednesday - Lab on the conservation of mass and lab on the effects of temperature on gas.

Thursday - completion of labs

Friday - teacher conferences

Nov. 2 - 6

Monday - Continuation of change of state lab and questions

Tuesday - What causes the water to rise? Write a paragraph to explain the rise of water in a test tube.

Wednesday - Pressure lab "Imploding Cans"

Thursday - Gas laws - problems on Charles' and Boyle's laws

Friday - Continuation and completion of the gas law sample problems.

November 9 -13

Monday - Continuation and completion of the gas law sample problems.

Tuesday - Continuation and completion of the Charles' and Boyle's Laws

Wednesday - Going to Condordia for future freshman day

Thursday - review for the chapter 3 test

Friday - test of gas laws and chapter 3

November 16 -20

Monday - Completion of chapter 3 test and vocabulary for elements, compounds and mixtures

Tuesday - Notes from powerpoint on elements, compounds and mixtures

Wednesday - worksheet identifying elements, compounds and mixtures

Thursday - Lab on the differences between compounds and mixures

Friday - Completion of lab and crossword puzzle

Nov.30 - Dec. 4

Monday - Separation of mixtures (chromatography)

Tuesday - Completion of lab

Wednesday - Lab test on separating mixtures

Thursday - Lab test on separating mixtures

Friday - Lab test on separating mixtures

Dec. 7 -11

Monday - Vocabulary on chapter 11 and 12

Tuesday - Students will be gone all day for their service project

Wednesday - Notes on atoms and the periodic table

Thursday - Worksheet on protons, neutrons, electrons, atomic numbers and atomic masses.

Friday - Computer elements - students use the computers to identify 10 different points about a given element to make a complete periodic table.

April 26 - 30

Monday - Lab on Newton's First Law " Stops Hurt" Why you should wear seatbelts.

Tuesday - Completion of lab questions. Worksheet on Newton's Second Law. "How to choose the best football player"

Wednesday - Lab on the second law of motion using the Newton car.

Thursday - Continuation of Newton cars

Friday - Worksheet with problems relating to mass and acceleration.

May 3 - 8

Monday - Staff meetings - no school

Tuesday - Newton's laws of motion problems (20)

Wednesday - Lab activity on Newton's third law. Alka-seltzer rockets.

Thursday - Completion of lab and Jeopardy game if time permits.

Friday - Field Day

May 10 - 14

Monday - 8th grade final exam (open notes, bring a calculator)

Tuesday - 8th grade final exam

Wednesday - If needed an extra day to complete the exam. Turn in books

Thursday - Spring Musical practice

Friday - Possible Spring Musical practice or we aill go over the final exam results and questions. Have fun in Washington D.C.

May 24 -28

Monday - Lab on forces in fluids

Tuesday -  Pool Party

Wednesday - Lab on viscosity of fluids - reward for the winning team

Thursday - Graduation Practice

Friday - End of  School - Hope everyone  stops by next school year to say hello and let me know how you are doing!!  Enjoy your summer!!!
