How can I contact you?
At anytime you feel you need to contact me, please do so by
phone, email or note. If it is am emergency, please contact the
office and they will alert me.
Email is probably the fastest way since I check my email
throughout the day. (sandra_aguais@roundrockisd.org)
If you call, my telephone number is 424-8755.
Please don't wait if there is something you would like to discuss
with me. I am usually at school before 6 am and can meet with
you before school or during planning time. Since I work a second
job, I am not always available after school.
What about homework?
I will be sending home a work packet on Fridays and I expect it
to be completed neatly, including attachments, and returned on
the following Friday. It should come home in the red daily
folder. Your child should be reading nightly, studying spelling
words, complete math or reading assignments and memorizing math
facts. The work can be completed in any order, at any time
during the week as long as it is completed and turned in on
time. Students are given the weekend to do homework to help
those of you that may have busy schedules during the week. If
your student looses the homework packet, there is also a copy on
the Second Grade website (not the attachments). New packets can
also be given out, but please do not wait until the last day to
tell us. Any homework not completed on time and neatly written
will be redone at recess on Friday. Don't forget to sign your
student's packet to confirm that they did their work. It is
their responsibility to have assignments completed on time, and
any materials returned on due dates.
Students are sent to study hall and will miss their recess if
assignments are not completed on time and done neatly.
What is the Daily folder used for? Do I need to sign it?
This is a special plastic folder that your child will carry to
and from school everyday this year. It will help your child stay
organized and keep you in touch with our classroom. The most
important thing in it is the behavior chart. This calendar will
show your child's behavior everyday.
Please initial and return EVERYDAY. This is also where correct
and return papers will be. These are papers that were done
unsatisfactory and need to be corrected at home. You may also use
this to send money, notes to the teacher, and important papers to
school. If you send in lunch money, be sure your child has a
pocket to keep it in. If you send in a check, they can stop
at the cafeteria before they come to class in the morning to drop
it off.
Please be sure your child's name is on the check and their ID
number if they know it.
What is your behavior policy? Do I need to sign anything?
Each teacher praises and compliments their students and rewards
them in various ways. The RESPECT chart is our second grade
behavior system. Each letter of the word respect represents a
classroom rule. A student is usually given 1-2 warnings before
receiving marks in their behavior folder.
If your child does receive a mark, they will lose some recess
time. A parent might receive a small note or phone call if the
unacceptable behavior persists. Please note that persistent
behavior violations may result in an office referral.
What's a Thursday folder?
All work completed will come home in the Thursday folder as well
as school information. It will be either checked or graded.
These are super-duper papers to keep at home (and maybe stick on
the fridge!) Please sign the folder, letting me know you received
the work, and return it on Friday.
Do students get to eat snacks? Who supplies them?
Parents are responsible for sending in snacks for their child. We
will have snack time in the morning around 9:30. Please send a
snack with your child everyday and be sure to keep the new food
regulations that the district has distributed in mind. The
snacks should be healthy - no cookies, cakes, sweets, or candy.
No colored drinks are allowed in the classroom. We don't have
alot of time, so try to send easy to eat snacks. I remind the
children that it is their responsibility to remember to
check they have brought a snack. Because of so many potential
food allergies, students are discouraged from sharing snacks with
friends. If the snack requires silverware, please be sure to send
it in also.
Can students bring water bottles?
Yes, absolutely! I allow water bottles but prefer them to be the
sport top kind to prevent spills. Students may keep their water
bottle in or under their backpacks. I ask that they be taken home
on Fridays for cleaning. Please write their name on their bottle.
Do I need to bring in school supplies?
Yes, Round Rock ISD requires students to bring in school
supplies. Please check our Union Hill home page for a list of
supplies needed for your child. Please do NOT label supplies.
I may ask for additional supplies throughout the year if our
supplies run low. If you are able to send in additional items
throughout the year, that would be wonderful. See my wish list
for suggestions.
What time does my child come need to be at school by?
School begins promptly at 7:45 am. Students may enter the
classroom beginning at 7:15 am and start on their morning warmup
activities. If they arrive to school before 7:15, they will be
waiting in the hallway until dismissed.
Please wait in the hallway with them until 7:15 if your are
inclined to walk them to class. If you do walk them in, please
let them do their morning duties on their own. They are responsible
for completing them and then know they are to begin their morning
math assignments.
If you are sending in lunch money, please have your child drop it
off in the cafeteria before class.
What if they arrive after 7:45?
Students who arrive after 7:45am are to go directly to the
office and obtain a tardy slip before coming to class.
Continuous tardies will be reported to the office and parents
will be notified by the school.
How long must my child read at night? Does it have to be every night?
Students should read nightly, if possible. The more they read,
the better they will get as well as their vocabulary. They will
have an opportunity to obtain books from the library each week.
By second grade, they should be reading chapter books on their
reading level. During the first few weeks of school, I will be
assessing their levels. They will be checking out AR books and
taking tests on them when they have finished.
What are AR books and why are they important? Where do I find a list of AR books?
AR stands for Accelerated Reader books. Research has shown that
there is a correlations between AR and TAKS scores. Students
will read an AR book and then take a 5 - 10 question
comprehension test on it. They will receive a passing score or %
passed. Students may use the book to check the answers if
needed. A list of AR books and the reading levels is located on
the library resource page. It is suggested that you print out a
list of 2.0 - 3.0 books. Students can then know which books they
want to check out before they go to the library.
Why do they have to practice their math facts? Do I need to have flash cards?
Students should practice their math facts nightly. Although 5
minutes is suggested, for some children they will need additional
practice. Students should be able to know their math facts in
their head and be able to answer within a few seconds.
Practicing with flash cards is one way a child can learn and will
be able to practice on own if necessary. You may wish to print
out a list of math facts and have your child complete it. Even
better, take advantage of a few minutes in the car or before
dinner to say a fact for your child and have them respond.
Students can practice all math facts or just concentrate on those
that they are having a hard time remembering. Once your child is
confident of addition, continue onto subtraction. If they have
completed Math Stars for addition and subtraction, they should
continue on to multiplication/division.
Can my child get a free breakfast and until what time?
All students can receive a free breakfast if they arrive BEFORE 7:35.
After that they are to come directly to class. Breakfast is only
served until 7:35 to give students enough time to eat it and then
begin on morning work. Instruction begins promptly at 7:45, so
all breakfast trays will be cleared. If you want your child to
participate in the free breakfast program, they must arrive to
school early.
