Spelling Bee

  	March 4, 2010

Dear Parents,

We are very pleased to announce that Second Grade will hold a classroom and
grade level spelling bee. This is a wonderful opportunity for your child to
practice and enhance their vocabulary and even become more proficient
writers. All students will participate in the classroom spelling bee.
The attached is a copy of this year’s Second Grade Spelling Bee words. There
will be two parts to the spelling bee. The first one will be a classroom
spelling bee on April 26, 2010, administered by the classroom teacher. It
will continue until there are two students left and one alternate. The final
two students will represent their classroom in a grade wide spelling bee on
May 7, 2010. The alternate will need to continue to practice and should be
available in case one of the finalists is unable to participate in the grade
level spelling bee.
The classroom spelling bee on April 26th will be a closed event. However,
parents of the two finalists or alternate will be invited to the grade wide
spelling bee on May 7th. It will be held in the library, beginning
approximately at 9:00 a.m. More specific details will follow.
There is a specific format which students will need to follow. Failure to
follow the rules will result in disqualification.

Please practice the words with your child in the following format:

Say the word to your child, they will then need to;

1.	Repeat the word
2.	Spell the word*
3.	Say the word again

*They will have 1 minute to spell the word; they are not allowed to write the
word before they spell it.
However, there are several things a child may ask only once before they say
the word for a final time. Once the word is said for the final time, what
ever they have said is final.

1.	They may ask for the word to be repeated.
2.	They may ask for the word to be used in a sentence.
3.	They may ask to start over – in which they would say the word again
and then spell it and say it again.
4.	They may ask for a definition of the word.

Students will be disqualified from the Spelling Bee if;

1.	They do not follow the above format
2.	They misspell a word

We know this will be a wonderful experience for your child and want to say in
advance how much we appreciate your support. It will be a fun and
educational experience for all. Thank you very much!
