What is resource?

Resource is a pull out program that allows students to work on 
mastering the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills. The skills
are determined after students are administered a criterion
referenced assessment. An individualized education plan (IEP) is
then developed for the student through the ARD process. The IEP
is reviewed through an ARD meeting, which is held annually.
Resource classrooms offer specialized curriculums to
appropriately match students needs.

What is occupational therapy?

Occupational Therapy is designed to assist in improving students 
gross and fine motor skills through activities for coordination,
organization, and feeding/dressing skills. The student is
identified special education through an ARD committee meeting,
and assessment for motor skills may be requested, and obtained
through this committee. Once a disability in this area has been
determined an ARD committee once again will meet, an IEP is
completed, and services begin. Providing these services improve
developmental skills for academic learning.

What are Speech and Language services?

Speech/Language services are offered for students with language, 
articulation, and processing difficulties. These disabilities
are recognized through a referral process. A parent permission is
obtained for their child to be tested, classroom observation,
health information, and teacher forms are completed. When all
information has been gathered, the speech therapist then begins
testing to determine if there is an impairment in speech or
language, which is then followed by an Admission, Review, and
Dismissal (ARD) committee to determine placement, and develop an
Individual Education Plan (IEP) to meet the need of the child.
This program is available for students pre-school age through the
5th grade.

What is Orientation and Mobility?

An orientation and mobility teacher work with students who have 
visual impairements. They travel throughout the district and
provide services to enable the students with a visual impairment
to move safely and independently with their immediate
environment. This includes, but not limited to: concept
development, gross motor skills, visual efficiency
skills,purposeful movement and exploration, environmental
awareness, etc.

What is an ARD?

Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee: The admission, 
review, and dismissal(ARD) committee is composed of a student's
parent(s) and school personnel who are involved withthe student.
The ARD committee determines a student�s eligibility to receive
special education services and develops the individualized
education program (IEP) of the student.

Comite de admision, revision y retiro (ARD): El comite de
admision, revisin y retiro (ARD) esta compuesto de el/los padre/s
del estudiante y personal escolar que participa en la educacion
del estudiante. El comite ARD determina la elegibilidad del
estudiante para recibir los servicios de educacion especial y
elabora el programa educativo individualizado (IEP) del
estudiante.

What is an Annual review?

Annual Review: A review of a student's special education program 
must occur at least once each year and includes an update of the
student's progress, a review of the current IEP, and development
of a new IEP for the upcoming year.

Revision anual: Una revision del programa de educacion especial
del estudiante que debe hacerse por lo menos una vez al ano y
debere incluir una actualizacion del progreso del estudiante, una
revision del IEP actual y el desarrollo de un nuevo IEP para el
ano siguiente.

What is a Behavior Intervention Plan?

Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP): A written plan developed as 
part of the IEP to address behavioral concerns affecting the
student's educational progress. It is based on a functional
behavioral assessment of the problem behaviors, identifies events
that predict these behaviors,includes positive interventions to
change behaviors, and includes methods of evaluation.

Plan de intervencion debido a la conducta (BIP): Un plan escrito
elaborado como parte del IEP para tratar los motivos de
preocupacion sobre la conducta que afectan el progreso educativo
del estudiante. Se basa en una evaluacion de la conducta
funcional de aquellas conductas problematicas,
identifica los acontecimientos que predicen estas conductas,
incluye intervenciones positivas para cambiar las conductas e
incluye metodos de evaluacion.

What is a Individualized Education Program (IEP)?

The ARD committee, of which parents are active members, develops 
the IEP. The IEP includes the student's present levels of
performance, measurable annual goals including benchmarks and
short-term objectives, specific supports and modifications, dates
of service, and evaluation procedures.

Programa educativo individualizado (IEP): El comite ARD, del
cual los padres son miembros activos, desarrolla el IEP. El IEP
incluye el nivel actual de rendimiento del estudiante, las metas
anuales mensurables incluyendo puntos de referencia y objetivos a
corto plazo, apoyo y modificaciones especificas, fecha de
servicio y procedimientos de evaluacion.

What are modifications?

Modifications are instructional supports determined by the ARD 
committee that will assist the student in mastering the goals of
the IEP.

What are TEKS?

Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS): The required 
curriculum for each grade level used in Texas public schools.
TEKS should be considered the general curriculum referenced in
the IDEA. Parents can access the TEKS on the Texas Education
Agency web page at http://www.tea.state.tx.us/teks/ or ask the
school to provide a copy of the TEKS for their child�s
ageappropriate grade level to use in the development of the IEP.

Conocimientos y aptitudes esenciales en Texas (TEKS): El plan de
estudios que se requiere y se usa en cada grado en las escuelas
publicas en Texas. TEKS debe considerarse como el plan general de
estudios al que se hace referencia en IDEA (Ley de Educacion
para Individuos con Discapacidades).Los padres pueden leer el
TEKS en la pagina de la agencia en la red en
http://www.tea.state.tx.us/teks o pedale a la escuela que le da
una copia del TEKS para el grado adecuado a la edad de su hijo
para que pueda usarla en el desarrollo del IEP.

What are Procedural Safeguards?

Procedural Safeguards: A document that explains your legal rights 
under state law and the IDEA to be involved in and make decisions
about your child's education. The document is often referred to as
the "Notice of Procedural Safeguards" or "Procedural Safeguards
Notice," because its purpose is to notify you of your legal
rights. The Procedural Safeguards must be provided to you, at a
minimum,when your child is initially referred for evaluation,
each time you are notified of an ARD committee meeting, when your
child is to be reevaluated, and any time you file a request for a
due process hearing.

Salvaguardas del procedimiento: Un documento que explica sus
derechos legales de acuerdo a la ley estatal y a IDEA para que
participe y tome decisiones sobre la educacion de su hijo. A este
documento se lo conoce frecuentemente como Notificacion de las
Salvaguardas del Procedimiento� porque su prop�sito es el de
notificarle sus derechos legales. A usted le deben dar las
Salvaguardas del Procedimiento por lo menos cuando a su hijo se
le da la recomendacion inicial para una evaluacion, cada vez que
se le notifique de una reunion del
comite ARD, cuando deban reevaluar a su hijo y en todo momento
que usted presente una solicitud para una audiencia con el debido
proceso.

What is ESY?

Extended School Year (ESY) Services: An individualized 
instructional program for eligible students with disabilities
that is provided beyond the regular school year. The need for ESY
services must be determined on an individual basis by the ARD
committee.

Servicios de ano escolar extendido (ESY): Un programa de
instruccion individual que se brindadespues del ano escolar
normal a los estudiantes con discapacidades que sean elegibles.
El comite ARD determinar de manera individual si los servicios de
ESY son necesarios.
