No HW - unless you need to make quiz corrections or finish your test review.  The review was due today before the test.  By now you will know how much you needed it!  We will conference on Friday to plan for success.

I will be out tomorrow, and Mrs. Pimentel will be talking to you about your elective choices!

Monday, Feb. 1
Work on your review for Wednesday's test (it is located in the NOTES section, if you didn't pik one up in class).  Use Ch. 11 and 12 and your ISN to complete it.

Due Monday - Ch12 Quiz, with answers highlighted  (multiple choice); also, be prepared for Monday's Government Quiz - see notes below:

Principles of Gov.

1. What two elements do all seven principles have in common?

(hint - one element has to do with people, and the other has to do with structure of government)

2. So....  What is the purpose of the seven principles of government?  Why do we need them?

Constitutions

1. How can you tell that the TX State COnstitution was influenced by the US Constitution? (How are they similar?)

2. How are the two constitutions different?

Structure of Government (3 branches)
What does the state constitution have to do with the structure of state government?
What are the three branches, and what does each branch have to do with laws?
Who are the members of each branch, and what are their terms?
What is BICAMERAL, and which branch does it refer to?
What is the specific strcuture of the judicial branch?

Complete your Ch12 Quiz Questions:
1 multiple choice question for each part of teh the three Ch 12 handouts (5 questions total).  Use the main idea of each section to frame your question.

Tuesday, Jan. 26

Complete the Ch12/3 handout (Slavery and Compromise of 1850).

Finish the Principles of Gov.  flipbook.
1. Fold unlined paper in half, hotdog (portrait) -style.
2. Fold in half, hamburger-style - 3 times.
3. When you open it up, there should be 8 section (still folded in half, hotdog-style).
4. Cut along the fold lines on the front only (this is the part the flips open).
5. The top section = title: Principles of Government
6. The rest are for the 7 principles - on the outside of the flap, draw a symbol or write an example of each principle; when you open the flipbook up, the principle goes on the left and the definition in your own words goes on the right.

Complete the Ch12 / 2 handout about the Mexican American War and the Treaty of Gudalupe Hidalgo.

Tomorrow is dedicated to completing the Branches of Gov. mini-project (see below for description).  Bring any supplies you may need!  The project is due at the end of class.

Wednesday, Jan. 20

Guided Reading handout - complete part I of the outline (A is done for you, but you need to find supporting details and you need to find another main idea along with supporting details for B).  We will check it as tomorrow's warm-up, so don't worry if it seems difficult!

MINI-PROJECT: You wil be creating a visual guide to one of the following -
*the three branches of Texas gov.
*the three branches of US gov.
*a comparison ofthe state and federal branches of gov.

You will be working independently, with a partner or with a group of three.  I will supply construction paper, scissors, glue and markers, magazines - the rest is up to you!

After taking notes tomorrow, you (and your group) will begin constructing your project. 

Suggestions:
*map / flow chart
*comic strip
*hanging mobile (like the Order of Operations project in math)
*3-D model (tree, wedding cake, etc.)
*poster

Tomorrow we will be dreaming, in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr.  If you wish to participate, bring your Ch. 11 skillbuilder - COMPLETED - to class tomorrow!

Wednesday, Jan. 13

Tonight's assignment is to write a RAFT:

R: Your role is a 12-13 yr. old, living in Texas in 1845.
A: Your audience is a significant adult in your life - a teacher (me), a parent or grandparent, a pastor or priest, a neighbor, an employer....  That means your writing should be polite, respectful, correct (proper grammar, spelling and punctuation) and reasonable / logical.
F: The format is a persuasive letter.
T: The topic is the vote for annexation.  Since you are too young to have a say, you must influence an adult in your life to vote either for or against annexation.  Use the reasons you came up with on your pros/cons list or on your pre write list to explain your thinking.

This letter should be at least one page , hand-written.  Bring the rough draft to class for peer-editing and we will finsih the final draft in class.

Tuesday, Jan. 12

Complete the triple Venn diagram comparing the three presidents of TX.  If you lost your handout, use a sheet of notebook paper!

*If you need Ch11/3 notes, I will upload pictures of the board to my NOTES page - be patient, it can take awhile!

Finish notes on Ch. 11 /3 (starting on p. 250 in the text book). I will be looking for at least two details from each subsection.  You will be reading about  Sam Houston's second term as President of teh Republic of Texas, and about the fight for annexation!

NO HW - but if you want to continue working on your country, here is what you need to know:

Create-A-Country

Side 1
-Name of the country
-currency used (what is it called, what does it look like?)
-structure of gov. (democratic, but will there be shared power, like a coucil, or will it look like the American structure of gov. - the three branches?)
-PROBLEMS
 *land distribution (including Natives)
 *defense (nat'l army or militia?)
 *rights (three inalienable rights, based on your group's characteristics)

Side 2
Design your flag (flag goes in the center of the paper)
Includes:
-one symbol, based on your group's shared characteristic (compassion, loyalty, hard-work, bravery, power or intelligence)
-3 colors that represent the shared characteristic plus two more that you have in common (or agree with)
