What is NJHS?

NJHS stands for National Junior Honor Society. The National Junior Honor
Society is a national organization comprised of a group of students who meet
and must maintain rigid academic and personal standards. The organization
creates enthusiasm for scholarship, stimulates a desire to render service,
promotes leadership, develops character and encourages good citizenship in the
members. Members take pride in their accomplishments and strive diligently
toward their goals of attaining a superior education and of contributing to
their school and community.

Here at Walsh, NJHS is open only to 8th graders. Members meet once a month to
discuss service opportunities and projects. We do a lot of volunteer work
both in and outside the school.

How can I join NJHS?

In order to join the Walsh chapter of NJHS you must be selected at the end of
your 7th grade year. To qualify, you must have an overall academic average of
93% or higher. You then must complete the application that is send to you by
the deadline. Your application is then reviewed by a council of teachers to
determine if you show the character and leadership qualities valued by NJHS.

What are the club requirements?

Dues: Once inducted you must pay a one-time membership fee of
$5.00. This money is used to offset the cost of the
induction ceremony and to pay the national membership dues.

Service Hours: NJHS members are required to complete a minimum
of 15 hours service and participate in one Walsh NJHS
service project.

Grades: NJHS members are expected to maintain a high level of
academic excellence throughout the school year. They need
to maintain an average of 93% or higher.

Meetings: NJHS members are encouraged to attend all monthly
meetings, but we understand that NJHS members are some of
the busiest kids on campus; often times our meetings
conflict with other extracurricular obligations. We ask
that if you miss a meeting, you stop by Mrs. Morello's
room (510) to find out what you missed.

What are service hours and how many do I need?

The Walsh chapter of NJHS has a very flexible definition of service hours. We
consider service to be doing something for someone without receiving
compensation. Compensation is when you get something in return for doing
something. The most common kind of compensation is money, but you may be
promised a trip to the movie theaters for babysitting your little brother.

You will need a total of 15 hours of service. You may count the hours that
you completed over the summer towards your 15 hours. Also, any volunteer work
you do with church groups or scout groups can count towards you NJHS service
hour total.
