It's Worth It

Learners need to practice about 15 minutes a day for 6 weeks to become
proficient. Students only come to my computer class once every 8 days. That
means they MUST practice on their own. It'll pay off big as they have to write
more and more each year.

This is a very good typing site to begin with because it has graphic
representation of hands on the keyboard. It reinforces keeping hands on the
home row and makes peeking less tempting. The kids and I giggle when we hear
the British accent.
Dance Mat Typing

Play and type here. No instructions, just practice time.
Cup Stacking Game

They like this one. Go here to download a free program that we've used in
school. This is for practice, too. I noticed students often taking their
fingers off the home row with this one. Their competitiveness get the best of
their discipline; they "cheat" to beat the game, so monitor their technique
with this one.
Tux Typing

This has the old-fashion look and feel. It isn't very flashy or exciting, but
it offers lessons and tests.

You can buy software, too. "Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing" has been a leader for
years. "Typing Master" has also gotten good reviews recently.
