Spelling

I have started putting our spelling lists on the Spelling City website. This is a great website
for your child to visit to practice their spelling words in a fun way. All you have to do is click
on the link below and it will take you to the Spelling City website. It should take you directly to
my page. Give it a try ~ who knows, your child may enjoy studying spelling words for a change. =)

Dear Parents ~

As the end of the first nine weeks quickly approaches I have had a few questions about grades
especially in spelling. Spelling is a part of your child's language grade and unfortunately for some
students their spelling test grades are bringing their average down. I have noticed that many of my
students are getting very low grades on their weekly test. Remember that I do send the words home
each Monday and their is a direct link to Spelling City on my webpage as well.

Yes, I do count the word wrong if it is capitalized and is NOT a proper noun. Spelling is a part of the
Language grade and since we study common and proper nouns in language I do expect my students
to practice this skill in their writing. I discuss with my students that if a spelling word is not a proper
noun then it should not begin with a capital letter. I remind my students every Friday that they
should not be capitalizing their words. I remind them that the first letter of each word should be a
lowercase letter and not touch the top line. I remind them several times during the test that their are
no capitals and once we complete the test I give them a few minutes to go back over their test and
look to make sure their are not capitalized words. I promise that this is an important lesson in both
spelling/language as well as in handwriting. I appreciate all that you do on a daily basis to support
us here at school.
