About The Teacher

This is my thirty first year teaching, my eighteenth year at Westwood.
I received my bachelor's degree from the University of Florida in
English Education and my master's degree in Psychology from the
University of Houston / Clear Lake City. I love teaching, young
people, and literature- a great combination for an English Teacher!
In the past 30 years, I have taught all of the grade levels and a variety
of ability levels, from TAG and AP/IB to College Prep to English for
reluctant learners. My daughter graduated from Westwood in 2009 so I am very
aware of the stresses of high school for both students and their parents.
I am currently working on a children's book set in Florida, a
romance novel about a teacher, and an historical novel with a fiesty
heroine. Haven't been able to complete any of them, though I work on them
over the summers.
Contact me about any concerns that you may have. I am well aware that
you are much more aware of your child's needs and learning abilities better
than I am and would appreciate your input. My conference blocks are second
and sixth.I am also available from 8:15-9am. My e-mail address is
sandra_bird@roundrockisd.org. I'll try and return your message as soon as I
can.

Mission For The Class

I want all of my students to gain from class the following attitudes:

All students can be successful in class.
Reading can be enjoyable and enlightning.
Writing is a good way to communicate thoughts and ideas.
It is important to use critical thinking skills in all areas of life.
Creativity is an important asset- use it.
You usually get out of something what you're willing to put
          into it.
Don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone!
There is a connection between what happens in class and the
          world you live in.
Your world and community needs your input.
