During the history of Scotland clans and bagpipes have always been very
important. Here you find statements on clans and bagpipes. Go to the
Internet links to find out if the statements are true or false. Write down
the answer on your worksheet AND correct the false statements.
1. The word 'clann' means 'father' in Gealic (this is a very old form of
English).
2. Clans lived self-sufficiently (= zelfvoorzienend). They were mostly
farmers with cattle (= vee) as their main wealth. They would never steal
cattle from other clans.
3. Clans originated (= ontstaan) in many different parts of the world:
- Clans with Norse connections
- Clans linked with ancient monastic (= koinklijke) houses
- Clans originated from Norman settlers
- Clans with an unknown origin
4. A kilt is a skirt (= rok) worn by Scottsmen (= Scottish men).
5. A tartan is a Scottish beer.
6. A bagpipe is a pipe you can smoke.
