ENGLISH 1-2 MS. AAGARD
ENGLISH 1-2 G.T.
Course Outline
English 1-2 or English 1-2 G.T., the first in the series of high school
English classes, is a complete language arts course covering writing, the
language conventions that support it, and all types of literature, including
short stories, poetry, novels, and Shakespearean drama.
During the first semester, we'll do a variety of work each week. You can
expect some writing, mechanics, literature, etc. In the second semester,
we'll focus on longer units, such as the study of novels and Romeo and Juliet.
Assignments
We will have work to do each class period. Unless told otherwise, assume
the assignment is due the next class session. You will have your own
textbook, so if you don't finish the assignment in class, take it home. For
some work, we will use classroom sets of materials. If you are unable to
finish that work in class, come in after school and check out a copy of the
book or packet. Some work, such as writing assignments, will be strictly
homework.
At the end of each school day, I post the day’s assignment on my web page,
which you can access through the school home page. If you're at home and
need a reminder of due dates or what the assignment is, check there.
When your graded work is returned to you, please keep it until the end of the
quarter. That way, it’s readily available if we need to verify that it’s
been done. Some finished and corrected work I will keep, such as routine
vocabulary and grammar tests
Late Work
On ordinary, day-to-day assignments, and for reasons other than absence, I
will accept late work one class session (two school days) after it is due.
Late work receives 60-70% credit, depending on its quality. There are
some things that I don’t accept late, such as essays and major projects.
You'll have plenty of notice on those. Be sure that you meet the due dates.
If You are Absent
As soon as you return to school, ask me what you missed. It’s best to wait
to ask when the class has settled into work time. Absent work should be
turned in by the third class session after the absence. You may have two
weeks to make up a test, but you must do it after school. You do miss
something when you're absent, so try to be here.
Grading
Grades are a combination of assignment completion scores and test scores.
Grades are earned according to the following scale:
A = 94-100% C = 73-75%
A- = 90-93% C- = 70-72%
B+ = 86-89% D+ = 66-69%
B = 83-85% D = 63-65%
B- = 80-82% D- = 60-62%
C+ = 76-79% F = Below 60%
This year, you're earning high school graduation credits, so it's important
to do well. I offer extra credit only occasionally, but the most you can
raise your grade with extra credit is 5 percent. . Therefore, your day-to-
day performance is very important. G.T. students, remember that you must
maintain a B average to stay in G.T.
Class Rules
1. Bring paper and a pencil or pen to class each day.
