literary term: characterization. Be sure to get this from someone if you

group work on "Caliban." Begin the writing extension. We'll finish tomorrow.
Dec. 2 - In fourth period, the seven people present did an extra-credit
crossword puzzle. Seventh period, copy literary term:
characterization. Read "The Soul of Caliban" (in a packet) and do the
reader's response (on a handout). It's due tomorrow.
Dec. 1 - For journal today, do a DOL. See me if you missed this. Do
vocabulary worksheet for "Soul of Caliban." Test/worksheet due on Friday,
Dec. 5. Do a pronoun worksheet, "Identifying and Using Pronouns." On the
back, put your answers to the worksheet, "Using the Nominative Case..."
Fourth period, remember that "American History" acrostic poems are due
tomorrow.
Nov. 25 - Do a personal narrative today for journal: The perfect
Thanksgiving is... Finish our discussion of the group work on "American
History." Do the writing extension (acrostic poem) for the story. Seventh
period turned theirs in. Fourth period's work is due on Tuesday, Dec. 2.
Nov. 24 - For journal today, do a show-me paragraph: It was a _____________
gane (or movie, concert, etc.). Be sure to provide specific support
details. Begin work on pronoun usage. In the blue language book, do the
Diagnostic Preview, p. 548-549. Do group work on the story from last
week, "American History." We'll turn it in tomorrow.
Nov. 21 - No journal today. Turn in your work from "American History"
and "Ballad of Birmingham." Take the vocabulary test from "American History"
and the verb usage test.
Nov. 20 - No journal today. After watching the video clip, "Shared Memory,"
read "American History," p. 565 in your literature book. On p. 575, do
Response and Analysis #5, the first two bulleted items on #6, and #7. This
is due tomorrow.
Nov. 19 - No journal today. Do a verb usage review in preparation for a test
on Friday. Discuss "Ballad of Birmingham." On that same paper, do
Vocabulary Development, p. 576. We'll finish it tomorrow.
Nov. 18 - No journal today. Do a worksheet on active/passive verbs. Correct
and turn in. Read "Before You Read," p. 463, and then read "The Ballad of
Birmingham," p. 464. After reading "The History Behind the Ballad," p. 466,
read the poem again. Then do the Response and Analysis questions, p. 467,
#5, 6, 7. This is due tomorrow.
Nov. 17 - Do a DOL for journal today. Finish and correct the work from last
Friday. Do the worksheet, "Using Here, There, and Where as Subjects."
Correct and turn in your "Verb Usage" paper. Do the vocabulary worksheet
for "American History." You can skip #1/literally and #9/linger.
Definitions are in the glossary of your literature book, p. 1093. Worksheet
due/test on Friday, Nov. 21.
Nov. 14 - No journal today. Fourth period, in the blue grammar book on p.
540, read the rules for using sit and set. Do Ex. 10, p. 540, and then
write sentences demonstrating the correct use of sit, sat, has sat; set, set
(past tense), and has set. Both classes, on p. 541, read the rules for using
rise and raise. Do Ex. 11, p. 541, and then write sentences showing the
correct use of rise, rose, has risen; raise, raised, has raised. Do Review
G, p. 542 and Part D of the chapter review on p. 564-547.
Nov. 13 - No journal today. Take the "Beware of the Dog" vocabulary test.
Discuss and turn in the work on "Wounded and Trapped" and "Beware of the
Dog." Spend the remainder of the period creating a holiday thank you card
for our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Nov. 12 - For journal today, do a personal narrative: Tomorrow we will make
holiday cards for our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. What do you think it
would be like to be in the military so far from home? What would you miss?
etc. Do group work and class discussion on "Beware of the Dog." On p. 605-
606, read "Wounded and Trapped," and do the #10 Response and Analysis
question on p. 607. You can put this on the same paper as your "Beware of
the Dog" work. It's due tomorrow. Also, remember our vocabulary test
tomorrow.
Nov. 11 - No journal today. Read "Literary Roots," p. 562-563. Then
read "Beware of the Dog," p. 591. On the back of the historic/biographic
chart, do the reader's response questions (on a handout). Then read "Meet
the Writer," p. 603-604. Then complete the front of the chart.
This is due tomorrow.
Nov. 10 - Do sentence expanding for journal today: 1. The photo showed...2.
The baby fell asleep. Do the vocabulary worksheet for "Beware of the Dog."
The test will be on Thursday this week. Work on verb usage today. In the
blue language book, do Ex. 9 and 10, p. 539-540. Write sentences of your own
demonstrating the correct use of lie, lay, has lain; lay, laid, has laid;
sit, sat, has sat; set, set(past tense), has set.
Nov. 7 - No journal today. Start a new paper entitled "Verb Usage." In the
blue language book, do the Diagnostic Preview, p. 516-517. Then do Ex. 6, p.
534. Don't copy the paragraph. Just show what changes (13 in all) must be
made to put the paragraph all in past tense. Write your answers like this:
1. am-was, have-had.
Nov. 6 - For journal today, do a show-me paragraph with this starter: The
hill was steeper than I thought. Finish, discuss, and turn in "The Raven."
Finish the quotation worksheet that we started on Monday. Correct and turn
it in.
Nov. 5 - Do a DOL for journal today. See me if you missed this. Correct,
discuss and turn in the synthesis worksheet on the Poe articles. Read "The
Raven." Do, from the back page of the packet, Thinking About the Selection
#4, 6, 7 and Critical Thinking and Reading, #1. We'll take ten minutes to
finish this tomorrow.
Nov. 4 - Journal: Today we elect our 44th president. Is running for public
office something that interests you? Why or why not? Read the four articles
about Poe's death, p. 184-190 in the literature book. Complete the synthesis
chart. Fill out one section for each article (try for at least three support
details in each), and then write just one statement of synthesis. That
statement should explain your conclusions after reading these articles.
(Example: After reading these articles, I believe that Poe.... or While it
appears that...I think that..., etc.)
Nov. 3 - For journal, do sentence expanding: 1. The storm left a mess; 2.
They hadn't won a game all season. Finish your 'Pit and Pendulum' cartoons
and evaluate someone else's. Begin the quotation worksheet. We worked on
Exercist 7 today. We'll finish later this week.
