June 2 - For journal, do a personal narrative on this topic:  How do you 
assess your three years at Wasatch/Churchill?  What was it like to be a 
student of a school within a school? etc.  Turn journals in today.  Those who 
hadn't finished their Ender tests finished them today.  Then work on the 
science fiction setting/creatures worksheet.

May 28 - First period did a DOL for journal.  See me if you missed this.  
Second period skipped journal today.  Take the "Ender's Game" test.

May 27 - Do a show-me paragraph for journal today (5-sentence minimum). 
Defend your opinion on this starter:  English should/should not be the only 
language used on government forms. Turn in Ender 13-15 work.  Complete the 
chapter 13-15 group packet as you discuss the end of the novel.  Remember our 
test on Thursday (details on May 22 summary below).  Bring your literature 
book and your copy of "Ender's Game" to turn in on Thursday.

May 22 - Do sentence expanding for journal today using these starters:  1. He 
performed well; 2. I felt like shouting.  Take the vocabulary test, Ender 
#3.  Do a usage review, Parts A, B, C of the chapter review on p. 613-614.  
Then take a usage test.  Get the work for Ender, Chapters 13-15.  It's due on 
Tuesday, May 27, by which time you should have finished the book.  We'll take 
a test on the novel on Thursday, May 29.  You should know:  conflict (3 
types), climax, resolution, dilemma, characterization, and irony.

May 20 - Journal:  This week, we enter the sign of Gemini (May 21).  Do you 
know your zodiac sign?  Do you fit the "typical" member of your zodiac sign?  
Do you believe in this stuff? etc.  If you don't know much about the zodiac, 
write a character description for your sign based on your own personality. 
In the blue language book, do Ex. 4, 5, and Review D on p. 604-609.  Turn in 
Ender 10-12 work and do a group discussion on Ender 10-12.  Do the vocabulary 
worksheet, Ender #3.  Worksheet due/test on Thursday, May 22.  Read to p. 277 
for Thursday, and finish the book by Tuesday, May 27.

May 16 - Do a DOL for journal today.  See me if you missed this.  Turn in 
seven entries for Journal, Weeks 4-6.  Turn in the vocabulary worksheet and 
take the Ender #2 vocabulary test.  Get the reader's response instructions 
for Ender 10-12.  It's due on Tuesday, May 20.  You should be up to p. 242 by 
Tuesday.  Continue work on common usage errors.In the blue language book, do 
Ex. 3 and Review A, p. 601-602.

May 14 - Do a show-me paragraph for journal today:  Define teamwork (5-
sentence minimum).  Begin a language unit on common usage errors.  In the 
blue language book, do the Diagnostic Preview, p. 598-595 (27 corrections).  
Then, using the Glossary of Usage, do Ex. 1 and 2, p. 598-600.  Turn in the 
Ender 7-9 work and do group work on Ender 7-9.  By Friday, you should be up 
to p. 206.  Remember that your "Romeo and Juliet" essay must be finalized by 
Friday, and we'll have a vocabulary test on Friday as well.


May 12 - For journal today, do sentence expanding:  1. It used to be...but 
now...; 2. As people, my parents are...As parents, they're... Go to the 
computer lab to type revisions on the "Romeo and Juliet" essays.  This is the 
last we'll work on these in class, but you may submit three times in all, if 
you want to work on at home.  The final submission must be done by Friday, 
May 16.  After that, you will no longer be able to access the assignment. Get 
instructions for the reader's response for Chapters 7-9 of Ender's Game.  
It's due on Wednesday, May 14.  Get new vocabulary worksheet, Ender #2.  
Test/worksheet due on Friday, May 16. 

May 8 - No journal today.  We spent most of the class period in the computer 
lab typing our Romeo and Juliet essay rough drafts.  You can finish at home, 
but you should have submitted your draft by tomorrow, Friday, May 9.  Turn in 
the vocabulary worksheet and take the vocabulary test (Ender #1).  Also turn 
in the written work for Chapters 4-6 (second period, Chapters 1-3 also).  By 
Monday, you should be up to p. 133 in "Ender's Game."

May 6 - Today's journal is a DOL.  See me if you missed it.  First period, 
turn in Ender 1-3 work. Second period, get instructions for the 1-3 
response.  It's due on Thursday.     Both classes, do group work on Chapters 
1-3.  Get instructions for the Chapters 4-6 response.  It's due on Thursday. 
Do vocabulary worksheet, Ender #1.  Test/worksheet due on Thursday, May 8.  
Finish CRT's.
 
May 2 - First period, but not second, did a show-me paragraph for journal 
using this starter:  Let me tell you how to... We had our extra credit 
recitations and then got the instructions for the written work for Ender, 1-
3.  It's due on Tuesday, May 6.  Second period had time enough for extra 
credit recitations only.  Those who didn't get to go today can go on 
Tuesday.  We'll also get the work for Ender 1-3 on Tuesday, and it will be 
due on Thursday, May 8.

April 30 - Do sentence expanding for journal today: 1. His face reddened; 2. 
the phone rang.  Begin "Ender's Game."  In order to finish in the next few 
weeks, you need to read about 17 pages per day (34 pages per class period).  
For Friday, then, read to p. 34 (or to the end of the chapter, p. 36).  We'll 
get the written work for Chapters 1-3 on Friday, and it will be due on 
Tuesday, May 8.  Take Parts 1 and 2 of the CRT.  Remember that Friday is the 
last day to do the extra credit this term.  Also by Friday, you should have 
turned in Headlines to Summarize Events, Important Daily Events, and the 
Character Analysis/Pie Chart worksheet.

April 28 - Journal:  Last Wednesday was Shakespeare's birthday (1564).  In 
iambic pentameter and using rhyming couplets,  write a four-line birthday 
greeting to Mr. Shakespeare.  Turn in essay outline.  I'll get them back to 
you soon, and we'll set a due date for the rough draft.  Together, read the 
play, "As You Like It," and complete the accompanying worksheet.  Remember 
that Friday, May 2 is the last day to do the extra credit this term.

April 24 - Do a DOL for journal today.  See me if you missed this. Get 
directions for the "Romeo and Juliet" essay.  Outline is due on Monday, April 
28.  Spend the remainder of the class period working on our calligraphy 
project.  There should be time to finish on Monday.  English CRT's will be 
Monday and Wednesday of next week.  Please be here.

April 22 - Do a show-me paragraph for journal today (5-sentence minimum):  
This is what my life would be like without a cell phone (or whatever).  
Correct the "Romeo and Juliet" test.  Read two articles, "Dear Juliet," 
and "Romeo and Juliet in Bosnia," p. 919-922 in the literature book.  On 
your "Odds and Ends" paper, do the Test Practice, p. 923.  Begin a 
calligraphy project.  We'll finish next time.

April 18 - Do sentence expanding for journal today with these starters:  1. 
The assembly was loud; 2.  Reality Town was fun (or whatever). Do the pre-
writing worksheets (Character Analysis/Act V Graphic Organizer) for 
our "Romeo and Juliet" essay.  Have it finished by Tuesday, April 23.  Take 
the "Romeo and Juliet" test.

April 16 - For journal today, do a personal narrative (5-sentence minimum).  
Today is the birthday of Charlie Chaplin (1889).  Who is your favorite 
comedian?  What do you like about him or her?  What kind of comedy appeals to 
you? etc.  Read Act V of "Romeo and Juliet," and complete and turn in the 
study guide.  We also watched the movie version of Act V.  First period took 
a play vs. movie quiz, but second period did not.  Remember our test on 
Friday, when you should be able to write definitions for soliloquy, 
monologue, and aside.

April 14 - Do a DOL for journal today.  See me if you missed this.  Read Act 
IV of Romeo and Juliet.   Complete and turn in the worksheet.  On a new paper 
labeled "R&J Odds and Ends," do Vocabulary Development, p. 894.  Put your 
paraphrases in iambic pentameter.  Test alert:  We'll take our R&J test on 
Friday, April 18.  Be able to write definitions for soliloquy, monologue, and 
aside.  Extra credit option:  Memorize and recite to the class 15 consecutive 
lines of "Romeo and Juliet."  These lines should be given by one character, 
and be sure that it's a passage you understand.  This is due by Friday, May 
2, but you may do it before then.  Tell me when you're ready.  You can get up 
to 15 points of extra credit, depending on the quality of your recital.

April 10 - For journal, do a show-me paragraph today (5-sentence minimum): 
Describe a piece of art that is decorating your home. Second period, finish 
Act III, and complete and turn in the study guide.  Both classes, work on 
iambic pentameter today.  Do the worksheet, "Blank Verse."  On the back, copy 
six lines of a speech we've already read and mark the iambic pentameter.  Put 
a check by those lines that don't follow the pattern.  The write six lines 
(or more) of your own, in iambic pentameter, explaining one important event 
that took place in Act III.  First period, also do Vocabulary Development, p. 
875, #1,2, 3.  This is due on Monday.

April 8 - Start a new journal today, Weeks 2-4.  Do sentence expanding:   1. 
He was obviously a tourist; 2. The children were playing on the beach.  
Continue work on writing issues.  Today, work on eliminating wordiness.  In 
the blue language book, do Ex. 8 and 9, p. 341-342. First period finished Act 
III.  We'll turn in the study guide on Thursday.  Second period read Scenes 
2, 3, 4, and 5, completing the study guide questions 9-15. 

April 4 - For journal today, do a personal narrative (5-sentence minimum) on 
this topic:  In Taiwan, today is National Tomb Sweeping Day, a day set aside 
to clean the graves of and honor ancestors.  Write about one of your 
interesting ancestors. 1A, turn in seven journal entries for Weeks 8-10, 
beginning March 13.  2A, turn in six journal entries for Weeks 9-1, beginning 
March 17.  2A, take the Act II quiz and turn in your Act II study 
guide.  Read Scene 1 of Act III and complete the study guide through #8. 
Update headlines and daily events.   1A watched the movie version of Act III, 
Scene 1.

April 2 - Do a DOL for journal today.  See me if you missed this.  Continue 
work with writing issues.  Today, work on parallel sentence structure.  Do 
Ex. 7, p. 340, in the blue language book.  Finish Act II of "Romeo and 
Juliet."  1A took a quiz on Act II and turned in the study guide.    2A will 
take the Act II quiz on Friday, so if you were on the field trip, make sure 
you have read the Scenes 3-6.  

March 31 - Do a show-me paragraph for journal today (5-sentence minimum):  On 
this, the eleventh day of spring, winter has returned.  Add specific sight, 
sound, and touch details to elaborate on the topic.  Work on common writing 
mistakes, beginning with run-on sentences.  On a new paper labeled, "Writing 
Issues," do Ex. 5 and Review B, p. 328-329 in the blue language book. Take a 
quiz on Act I of "Romeo and Juliet." Read Scenes 1 and 2 of Act II, 
completing questions #1-8 on the Act II study guide.  Copy literary term, 
soliloquy.  Be sure to get this from someone if you missed it.
