Mission For The Class

The Wasatch Junior High FRENCH program
Teacher: Pierre Baigue
Educated in France and in Utah
Master of Arts in Teaching Degree
21st year at Wasatch

The FIRST objective of the class is NOT to learn the French language. Why?
There is little chance that students will need this language in the future.
However, most students will need to interact with non-English speakers at
some time in the future for work, study, pleasure, and humanitarian or church
service.

The FIRST objective of the class is to learn and practice skills and
strategies to communicate (listen, read, speak and write) with others in ANY
LANGUAGE, ANYWHERE, ANYTIME, FOR ANY PURPOSE. In addition, cognitive
abilities are developed which will positively affect general studies in high
school and college. The immersion approach or “natural way” is used rather
than translation and formal grammar.

The SECOND objective of the class is to learn and practice how to view and
understand cultures different than ours. This is done through discussing “in
French” a variety of materials which have integrity covering current events,
history, geography, art, and philosophy.

The THIRD objective of the class is, of course, to learn French …the natural
way. Authentic and current news items, short stories, and modern songs are
used at all times. Wasatch students who have been tested with the STAMP test
(Standards-based Assessment & Measurement of Proficiency) have consistently
scored at or above grade levels. High school French teachers have indicated
that Wasatch students are extremely well prepared for their classes including
AP and IB programs.
