DISCLOSURE STATEMENT SPANISH 1 (Spanish 2's disclosure follows this one below) has the right to prevent another student from learning. Students need to respect themselves, teachers, other students, and the school and classroom environment, (see class rules). ¡ BIENVENIDO a ESPAÑOL 1 ! Welcome to Spanish 1. This is a one year course designed to prepare students for their journey into the world of foreign language (español, por supuesto). Spanish 1 introduces students to the fundamentals of the Spanish language, emphasizing pronunciation, communication (listening, reading, writing, and speaking—yeah!), and culture. I believe in the immersion, or natural, approach to learning a second language. THEORY: Why immersion? As I mention above, immersion is the natural approach to language acquisition. Babies learn to speak by listening, observing, and experiencing their parent’s language. In my classroom, I reinforce this approach through reading, writing, and providing experiences using the language. The strategies are based upon studies by UCLA’s Dr. Stephen Krashen (reading), former Dr. Allan Paivio’s (dual coding theory), Italian educator Dr. María Montessori (using the 5 senses), and former San Jose State University’s Dr. James Asher’s (TPR). Students are to do the following:
1. Come prepared and ready to learn—bring your (supplies) notebook, pencils, planner, and brain to class every day.
2. Be in your seat before the tardy bell rings-- (You will need to sign the tardy board each time you arrive late to class, unless you have an excusal note.)
3. Respect the teacher, each other, yourselves, and property.
4. Honor the dress code—check your handbook—this is a “G”-Rated class.
5. Students may bring water bottles to class unless students become disruptive with their containers.
6. Be positive—no negatives to yourself and to each other.
7. Have a good attitude about learning the language. The more you apply yourself, the more you will enjoy the class and the language.
8. Honor the Safe School Act—keep your hands and objects to yourselves.
9. Follow all school policies (see Student Handbook).
10. Be honest in all you say and do. CONSEQUENCES FOR VIOLATION OF CLASS RULES:
