  MISSION STATEMENT:

Every student has the right to learn in a safe and positive environment.

COURSE DISCRIPTION:   Spanish 2 is an upper level Spanish course which builds on the foundation established in Spanish 1.   This course will prepare students for Spanish 3 and will expand their listening and reading comprehension skills.  Creativity in  the language is always encouraged.

COURSE OBJECTIVE:  Spanish 2 is an immersion class based on the following:

·         The 5 C’s of National Standards in Foreign Language

·         The theories of Dual Coding (Pavio), TPR (Asher), and Acquisition (Krashen).

·          Learning strategies using the 5 senses (Montessori)

I encourage listening comprehension and conversation in Spanish (in and outside the classroom). I also encourage my students   to experiment and have fun with the language.  Students are asked to check my Web Page frequently (www.teacherweb.com) for announcements and a summary of class instruction for that week. All videos shown in my class will be for instructional purposes, not entertainment.  Videos will be shown in Spanish and in accordance with district policy.

  COURSE RATIONALE:

The immersion program is called the natural approach to language acquisition. The natural approach has been proven successful in the classroom by foreign language instructors across the nation. Researchers from various institutions, such as USC, Brown University, and the University of Virginia, have found that language use and retention are strongest in foreign language classrooms using immersion and student involvement.

  NOTE:

Because this is an immersion class, most of the lessons and instructions will

be conducted in Spanish.  I will be glad to meet with any student after school

to assist them in mastering their comprehension and communication skills.

TOPICS TO BE COVERED THIS YEAR:

In the first quarter, students will review key elements, culture, vocabulary, and

expressions from Spanish 1 in addition to spoken and written Spanish.

Throughout the school year, students will be exposed to articles, current events,

sports, stories, Spanish poetry, art, music, culture, and points of interest.

Students will be heavily involved in listening comprehension exercises along with

TPR, reading, and writing exercises. Of course, grammar will be briefly covered to

facilitate in the comprehension and communication processes.

   Side note on grammar:

Grammar is the skeleton of any language. The focus will be on the present, past,

and future tenses; the -ings, the have dones, reflexives, commands,  etc. etc. etc.

One cannot learn a second language without being exposed to culture.

Spanish 2 will focus on the cultures of Spain vs. Latin America vs. the U.S. vs. the world.

Students will be given survival expressions along with lessons conducted in Spanish

over history, geography, science, music, art, home, community, the world, locations,

directions, actions, emotions, nature, health, food (yeah!), economics, the basics—

(Have I left anything out? Aaagh!)

   measurable assessments—assignments, quizzes, tests,

Late work (points will be lowered by 50%)—see handbook.

to not take the exam at that time, he or she may take it later

in the week, after school, for reduced points.

Retakes are given after school within 7 days after original test has been

returned to students (students who do well on the retake tests will have 5 points

added to their original score).
